How were you recruited? Tell us all the details.
My husband and I relocated to NC and started attending a church. The secretary is a MK Director and immediately seized upon the fact that I was not yet working and proceeded to seduce my husband into nudging me into the MK zone. We needed income and since I wasn’t working I felt obligated to at least sit down and listen to what she had to say. I had many reasons not to join – I was new to the area so I didn’t know anyone, I had no friends as of yet, no contacts, I didn’t wear makeup, I was not a girly girl, I am introverted and shy, non aggressive, hate pushy sales people, etc. In other words: if a MK person is looking to recruit – you don’t want me! Anyway, she told me all about her free car, the immediate $ you make at a party, the health insurance (yep she lied), the tax breaks, everything. It was just a two hour power session where life just couldn’t get any better for her. It was only after I decided to do it that I was told I had to purchase a starter kit. And once I had the starter kit I was told I needed to purchase inventory ‘because you can’t sell from an empty store”. But before I was led into the inventory buying portion I was shown all the ‘prizes’ I could get by selling so much. Right. You mean ‘buying’ my prize, don’t you? It killed me but I ordered $1800 worth of inventory. My director decided what to order. She promised me she would be there every step of the way to help me. We booked my ‘debut’ party and I invited every woman on my FB friend list that was local. I invited them to invite a friend as well. So technically I could have had as many as 50 people show up at my debut if everyone came and brought a friend. I was encouraged to provide refreshments as well. So debut day comes, I pop about $50 on drinks and snacks, little paper plates, napkins, etc. I had ONE person show up. She told me to not get discouraged, that it was a bad time of the year, blah blah blah. I had a second party and a friend and I invited 75 people personally by invitation (again, asking them to bring a friend or two), I created an ‘event’ on facebook and invited all my friends and church buddies and again invited them to bring a friend or two. I made two friends admins on the event so they in turn could invite all their friends (and their friends, and so on and so on…). Then a week before the party I personally messaged every single one of them reminding them of the party, asking them to bring a friend or two, etc. Day of the party I again popped $ for refreshments. I had FOUR people show up. What little I actually sold was eaten up by travel expenses (1 hour round trip), refreshments, free hostess gift to my friend, all the paper and ink for printing the invites, and oh yea, since I used the church’s space I should make a donation to them as well. Hmmm.. I actually lost money.
And I also paid for the MK web site, advertised on Craig’s List, gave out Look Books and offered to hold classes in towns that are over an hour drive from my home. The only thing I didn’t do was SELL anything. But hey, I was a ‘STAR CONSULTANT’!
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
Getting my STAR pin in the mail. Do you know why this was so instrumental in me quitting? Because I got the star status for doing NOTHING but giving MK my money! All I did was BUY product and store it in my spare bedroom. I didn’t ‘sell’ a certain amount. You get rewards based solely upon what you buy, not what you sell, and off of what your recruits buy not what they sell. In companies I’ve worked for that have had sales teams, the ones that got the kudos were the ones that SOLD. Everyone loves a little recognition and a pat on the back, but I want it for what I did, not what I bought. I’m sorry, but you don’t deserve a prize, a sash around your evening gown or a car for buying product from MK or enticing others to buy inventory as well. MK is a house of cards. They build it up and it looks substantial until you breathe too hard and the house comes crashing down. And that ‘free’ car my director drives? I am sure that when my inventory goes back that she’s going to have to make a co-pay on it when her bottom line takes a hit. Bottom line: their ‘sales’ numbers are not real! Those numbers are based on what consultants purchase, not what is sold to actual customers.
What are you doing now?
Looking for a real job with real benefits. Just boxed up all my inventory and waiting on the repurchase form to ship it all back. Meantime my director is sending me ‘happy birthday’ text messages asking if I’ve booked my cousin’s party yet and have I ordered my star prize? Um, no and no!
Additional comments here:
I’ve read other comments on the dress code. I am a jeans and t-shirt girl all the way. I grew up a tomboy and have not changed one iota. I do not (ever) wear anything that resembles a dress or skirt. I also have lymph-edema, which means my legs are swollen 24/7. I won’t even wear capris. There is no way I am going to be bullied into wearing a dress or (gasp) evening gown!
I was looking at all the 2010 seminar pictures and they all look alike! They all have the same hairstyles, the same makeup look, the same smiles, the same poses.. and are they all dancing alike as well? To me MK seems like the BORG on Star Trek – you will be assimilated and lose your identity. And IDK… it may be just me. But if you are selling makeup for a living I really don’t think you deserve a sash, a crown, a bouquet of flowers, a limo, a red carpet…etc. Are you kidding me? I know people that deserve recognition for a job well done but you’ll find these people at hospitals, fighting fires, being a first responder at an accident, defending our rights as Americans. All that fluff that MK spends millions on…(all the pageantry fluff at Seminar, etc.) hey… donate it. Your ‘Go-Give” don’t mean squat when its going right back to MK.

How were you recruited? Tell us all the details.
I was recruited from a friend of mine from college. I actually did a “facial” with her a couple months back, and got suckered into signing up…however, she told me that she would give me 24 hours to think about it and to discuss with my fiance, and if I decided not to do it, she would rip up the contract, which she did. Flash to two months forward. After recently moving my job, I thought “why not sell Mary Kay?” even though my fiance was against it, and he directed me to talk to his mom, who used to sell it and made me aware of the loopholes that they don’t tell you about. She said as long as I get 50% on EVERYTHING, to go ahead and sign up for it, but she warned me about inventory. I signed up because I got a free Miracle Set with the cost of my starter kit that I plan on sending back, along with my inventory. On my way home, I talked to my future mother-in-law again, and decided I would not do it. Well, when I let her know I changed my mind…I was already locked into the system. She told me things like “you’re just nervous, I know that you’ll be great at this, I have a peace about it.” Funny, because two days later I was coerced into buying the inventory, and I’m happy to know I’m not the only one who had the wool pulled over her eyes. I’m not pushy, I’m not really a salesperson personality AT ALL. I was convinced to sink 1800 into inventory (which came out to 2145 after taxes), which nearly depleted my joint savings account with my fiance. She told me that she would write me a personal check for 10% if I didn’t sell anything, and it sounded like a good idea, although I was foolish and didn’t consult with my fiance before making this decision. I met with her, and she set up the party date, even though I was still floundering. I told myself that I would sit down with my fiance when I had a plan, and see how it went. My fiance found the starter kit delivered to our home when I was gone, and flipped his lid!! My fiance and I have had serious problems because of this, and I hate to say it, Mary Kay has come close to ruining our relationship. We are trying to heal through this, but it is going to take time, and we are getting married in three months. When I told her I wanted to send everything back, she told me I can’t just send it back, and it’s a process…I didn’t even know I could send back my starter kit!! Am very happy and thankful that I am sending EVERYTHING back. She also told me we needed to have at least one party before I send everything back. She’s not being respectful to my needs or those of my family’s.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
None…didn’t even have a party!!:)
What are you doing now?
Trying to heal, and trying to get out of it!! It’s not worth it, especially if it is going to jeopardize my relationship with my soon to be husband! They tell you God first, family second, and MK last, but when I kept objecting about how I didn’t want to do this, I was told that it would be okay, and that she had peace and he would come around (it’s been two weeks, and he DEFINITELY has not come around and definitely has not been happy with my decision)
Additional comments:
Don’t believe the hype! My sales director/recruiter (who was a friend of mine from college) swore up and down that my fiance would come around, even when I kept saying “I don’t know about this”….I had sleepless nights worrying about my decision (and I am normally somebody who is EXTREMELY good with money and responsible with money!!), my anxiety has been through the roof, and I felt like, as somebody who is well educated, fairly intelligent and savvy…I totally got duped. I can’t get over the fact that MK nearly ruined my relationship, and we’re still trying to work through it. STAY AWAY FROM MK!!! While I’m sure it works for some, it doesn’t work for everybody, and that’s the truth.

I came in sideways. In other words, I wasn’t recruited. I saw on Facebook that a family member was selling and she said that I could sell as well for only $100. Because I had a full time job, it seemed like a no brainer, so I signed up immediately. I signed on a Saturday and on the following Monday, my new sales Director called me to do my “training”. My training was her (in another state) taking me through her Unitnet site and showing me my inventory options.
My heart sank. But as I listened, I wanted to believe the career path. I wanted to believe that I could do what so many other women were doing! I feel guilty all the time for draining our savings to start a business when I had no formal training and no previous experience. I found out pretty quickly that I was a natural salesperson. That was exciting and gave me confidence to move forward. I found out just as quickly that this particular business is not built on what I did, but on what others who I recruited did or didn’t do. I found out I didn’t like recruiting at all.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I began to notice little things that didn’t add up. When I had a new recruit, whose initial inventory was placed on a Sunday night at 7:30 PM on February 28th, I knew something was amiss. That was not what was in her best interest in any way. Those of you familiar with the 3 month discount can see why as well. She lost an entire month of ordering privileges.
I noticed other things that didn’t seem to make sense. Why would the company go to such efforts to make us want to be Stars? I started to feel like there was a company within the company that was marketing to us–their sales force. Who does that?
I was proud that I figured out on my own, that the Independent Beauty Consultants were Mary Kay’s BEST customers. If they sold us $1800 worth of product–why would they care if we never sold it. Imagine someone going into Target and purchasing $1800 worth of cosmetics. I was glad that I WAS ABLE to see that it wasn’t that much different. I am proud of the fact that I figured out that there were flaws in the system without anyone pointing this out to me.
What are you doing now?
I am walking, reading and writing. I will be getting a part time job soon. But, I am actually okay with that. I know that it will mean that I will make some new friends and I will learn some new things about myself and about the world.
I may send back my inventory soon. I may keep selling it until it dries up. I have until October to decide. I don’t consider this a total loss, because of this experience I am more aware of the importance of being true to myself.
I praise God that I don’t have to dress in a fashion that isn’t me, but I also am thankful that I learned how to take better care of my skin, apply my makeup and I took the time to get a new great hairstyle that gets me many compliments.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
I have to take responsibility for my own actions. I made the choice to order and reorder and reorder. I got a little greedy to be number #1 in my unit (although, I only made it to #3). I won’t blame others for the choice I made to go over the edge in PINK. Some of my choices were made because there was a major corporation, with people skilled in marketing pressuring me, though–so I won’t be hard on myself for the money I wasted while under the pink fog. I can’t change any lie that was said to me, but I can take pride in the fact that I never lied to anyone to move up any ladder.

I felt totally used, chewed up and spit out. I found it to be dog eat dog and a far cay from what I was told it would be.
At my local meeting, the witch in charge totally humiliated my guest and then accused me of having wrong inventory in front of the whole room. I invited her to come see my inventory ( i had nothing to hide) then she really got angry.
I found her rude and unprofessional .
I turned her into the corporate office and they did nothing.

My director was a patient of mine. She asked if i have ever heard of Mary Kay. I said yes. She asked if i needed to make some extra money. I said yes, then she started with her story how she was making $175/hr in NY and she was tired of the coorporate world. Well why would she ever leave $175 an hour? I am sure she got benefits/ health insurance and paid time off. Perks of a real job that MK does not offer.I asked if the economy now has slowed her business and she said “actually i have gotten busier”. I came into this with my eyes wide open. The reason why i purchased so much initial inventory was because you got $600 worth of FREE inventory with it PLUS 55% off retail The main reason they say is that customers want their product NOW. I do agree with that in a way, but even with $3800 worth of inventory you still dont have everything. I should have just purchased maybe $1000 of the basics in hind sight.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
Pro’s: If you are insecure, you need someone to cheer you on in life- join.
Cons: Don’t be suckered in to buying inventory, get the minimum build your business and only spend what you can afford. Remember, it’s your business.
I hate the scripting !! Scripting is soo fake! thats the only way they get people to get suckered in, Th only reason i wasn’t in the hole is that i did sell alot, so i broke even. But if i would have gone down that road of being Star consultant, going to seminar etc. Who knows.
What are you doing now?
I sent all my inventory back and am sooo happy for doing so. I feell bad for the ones that don’t make it.

I have gone to MK parties since I was a kid with my mother. About 4 years ago my aunt who is like my big sister signed up and since I still loved the product I helped her in every way I could and I agreed to do an interview for her from her debut party. After I listened to the information I said thanks but no thanks I will buy everything from you though! Well my aunt since stopped selling because she wasn’t all into it. While I was in college I worked at Radio Shack and after I graduated, I was excited to only have one job. My BIG PEOPLE job. Then came the BIG PEOPLE bills! HA. For about a year after college I worked my full time job as a buyer and my part time job at Radio Shack who began cutting commisions and cutting bonuses until I was pretty much working for mimimun wage. I had so much animosity built about about working at Radio Shack that as I was walking into the mall one day before my shift I call my aunt and asked her for her director’s phone number (since I met her at my aunt’s debut) and proceeded to walk into my store and gave my boss my 2 weeks notice.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I have a lot of experiences that it would take a long time to share them all. I have had positive experiences and negative ones. I started working this business for a few hundred bucks to help with my enormous student loans. (That was easy for me) Then I did get caught up in the hype and all of a sudden wanted a car. I came close to earning the car but didn’t make it. I have 5 people on my team currently. Only 2 are consistantly active and I don’t mind. The girls on my team have fun and use it for spare cash as I do. None of us are in debt for the inventory we have. I am honest with my girls with how things can be done. If I earn more money with commisions awesome it just goes into savings anyways I don’t push for more recruits.
One of my best experiences is sitting with 1 of the (recent) million dollar directors and hearing about how it took her 2 times to actually become a director. I know not many people actually make it to the top but I am not conserned with that. It is nice to hear “top” people struggle too (health, family, and Mk wise).
What are you doing now?
I am still working my full time job as a buyer and selling MK for fun. I just sold enough this week to have spending money for my weekend get-a-way. No I didn’t hound customers. They called me to reorder. They know I will keep what they want on hand for them but if they want something new they will have to wait a week or 2 they don’t mind because I am as honest and upfront as I can be. I hate being con’d and I refuse to be a sneaky sales person. I think thats about all!

How were you recruited?
This is my second foray into Mary Kay. The first was extremely short lived. I was recruited after getting a facial with a friend like 13-14 years ago. I don’t know what the heck those ppl were thinking because they literally had me buy a starter kit then never called me again. I didn’t even buy product. I knew there was a center, but I was never told that there would be training or anything. So anyway, jump forward to now. I was “warm chatted” by my recruiter who is on her way to becoming a director. She just qualified for her car. We met at a restaurant where she was picking up her child and mine was also there playing. I went to another facial because I really did love the product way back when and I really liked the changes that they made. (no more mask and so many steps.) Anyway of course she tried to recruit me. I held off for a few weeks. I wanted to see if I loved the stuff for a bit longer because I’m not a natural sales person or a good liar. I love the stuff.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
Well, I have several. The first negative one was of course being stuck with a starter kit 13 years ago and not knowing what to do with it. The second was going to a rah, rah meeting and being there with my eyes open. I do pay attention when I hear the awards for the highest sales..etc. I am very aware that for me it will probably be just a little extra side cash. However, the best positive experience has been having a very informal facial with a friend. It was so funny because it was so not how MK tells us to do it. My friend called and said to come over because she wanted to try the stuff and she only had time right now. So I went in my capri pants and shirt (my make-up was on at least!) Our kids, my three and her three kept running in and out of the house while I did this facial and my friend purchased close to $200 worth of stuff! I’m so much not a sales person that I was like, “Are you sure?” She said yeah. That has given me confidence to know that this is doable.
What are you doing now?
I’m staying at home with my youngest daughter. She is the main reason why I’m giving this a shot a second time. I could not make a living off of this, but I have made a very average $100/week profit (not sales..profit) some weeks I have not made anything and then others its been $300. I hardly put any work into it. I go to the weekly meetings which for me are a little bit of get away from the kids me time. I have gottten some out of them. Like fund-raising ideas and other “income producing” activities. They are useful, but I won’t get rich off of it. I have only had to drive a little to drop off to strangers. I did I guess 2 days work for about 5 hours and did a raffle to get leads, but my daughter was with me and we took frequent breaks. I don’t think that was a bad deal or even a lot of “work.” I made gift baskets, but that wasn’t a lot of “work” either as my preteen daughter did them with me and we got to spend time together. I was also able to stop whenever I wanted/needed to change a diaper or help with homework. So so far I’m really enjoying this.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
I really love your site. I know that seems strange because our opinions differ so much. But I’ll tell you why I love it. It keeps things in focus for me. I’m not in a “pink fog.” I know that it’s thanks to you. I can see things for what they really are. This “job” is a means to extra cash for the extra’s my kids need. It is VERY VALUABLE to me because it gives me just enough that I will be able to stay at home with my little one a little longer. So yeah, I do have to call people sometimes and hear no. Rejection sucks, but that’s ok, because I’m doing this for her. I hope that whoever is considering this just goes into it with their eyes open. I think that it is a flexible company that can be many things. For me, its a little extra cash with a huge benefit that can’t be measured in dollars. For my recruiter its a car and the chance to work this full-time and (apparently, not sure if its the true case) make a decent living. I would also say, play by your own (fair) rules. I have teamed up with another unit member who wasn’t able to buy huge inventory. I think it’s frowned upon but we open each other’s inventories to help the other out. We also sometimes team up on orders to help defray shipping. Remember this business should be about helping women out. Also remember that this is supposed to be YOUR business. Don’t be afraid to make rules that work for you. Have fun with it! AND BE REALISTIC AND SMART.

i was recuited by n.pettaway who been in this business for 23yrs. i was really sure if i was cut down for the business but to my surprise in my first 6mos in Mary Kay i had earned the use of my first company car as well as becoming a sales director
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I most memorable experience would be watching myself been tranformed right before my very own eyes. Having the MK experiece as well as being able to share it others who desire more of everything. Watching my husband face after picking up from a 15mos tour in Iraq; and in our rideway was brand new car MK of course!!!!!
What are you doing now?
MK no doubt!!!!
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
Well I personally alone with so many consultant and directors had complained to the company about this situation it has been unfair to all of our business and I’m thankful that MK has moved forward with his matter I just hate that it had to come to this; but it had been going on for way to long.

How were you recruited? :
I went to my sister’s debut party, and 3 of the 4 guests signed up to be consultants. That should have been my first clue: market saturation. The gal doing the recruiting used all the cutesy little sayings (e.g., “buy it for a dollar, sell it for two”).
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I did a HUGE debut (invited about 50 people, and ~30 showed up). My director was SOOO encouraging (of course, I just bought $3600 inventory, duh), and told me she knew I’d sell at least $1000 and get tons of recruits. No recruits, and sold about $325. That’s when the sleepless nights began. WHY had my director ordered me 15 items of a product that was being discontinued (“you’ll need LOTS of these– they’re being discontinued but everyone LOVES them!” I later sold all 13 I had left for $.99 on ebay)? HOW was I going to pay off this ridiculous debt? WHY weren’t my friends excited for my new business venture like they were supposed to be? They were treating me like a pesky saleswoman and running when they saw me… And WHY did I have to PAY to go to a motivational meeting? And if I’m an independent contractor, why do I have to wear a certain “required” uniform and why am I not allowed to advertise and sell wherever I want to? How come I HAVE to give away $40 of product to a hostess? Wasn’t I supposed to be able to buy it for $1 and sell it for $2? I spent a whole evening doing a show and any profit I made was swallowed up by the hostess’s free $40 of product. I think I actually lost money on that show. And how come I HAD to order $200 wholesale every quarter to stay “active”?
I WORKED MY BUTT OFF to sell enough inventory to pay off the credit card (while also working two other part-time jobs). Thankfully that motivated me and my husband to pay off both our cars and we’re debt free except the house. I’ve sold most of my outdated inventory on ebay now for a loss. Dave Ramsey calls it “stupid tax.” Never a more appropriate name. It was an expensive lesson.
What are you doing now?
I’m a stay-at-home mommy of 3 who rarely wears makeup and washes her face with organic products.

Filled out questionnaire at my kids daycare. Lady called a week later said I won a free facial (yeah right) and a $20 gift certificate. She wanted me to throw a party probably to torture other people! But most of my friends don’t have the money to buy a stick of gum let alone make-up. So I went to her house and she gave me the demonstration and the bs about how much fun, money blah blah blah. I said that I did not want to sell I just wanted someone to buy the product from. I love the product just don’t want to commit to something. Plus I am not the best people person. Talking in front of a group of people scares me to death and I am not agressive I was raised to know that No means NO! She kept going on and on and so she would let me leave I agreed to take some books and show them to some people. I had no intentions of doing so just wanted to get away from her.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
The torture that followed me for the next 2 month!!! The lady blew up my cell phone with calls about have I sold anything and wanting me to to come to her meetings. Probably so the other vultures could pounce on me. It got so bad she badgered me and bothered me day and night I told her NO NO NO NO NO!!! But she obviously did not know what the damn word meant! It got so bad I had to change my phone number. Then she shows up at my home wanting to talk to me about the opportunity of a lifetime that I am passing up. I said NO for about the 1,000th time. She just could not get the hint. She had her director call me and I told her the same thing that I had told the other lady she got the point unfortunately Lady 1 still did not get it. I had finally had enough and I had the police tell her to leave me alone. Thats right I called the police and they said that it was considered harrassment and stalking and if she did not leave me alone they would have no other choice but to arrest the bitch. She got the point
What are you doing now?
Working the same job I was when my nightmare began and a single mom to two beautiful children!!!!
Additional Comments:
I still love the product and wish I could find someone that I could buy from without the pressure to sell!!!
