Trolling for Cancer PatientsOkay, a Beauticontrol consultant sent me this doc. I know that the source is biased, but I am posting it because it validates something I have already heard from other Mary Kay Survivors: MK reps use the cancer wards at hospitals to troll for customers and recruits. Now, I just want to warn all of you reps from Arbonne, Beauticontrol, and Jafra: don't think that just because I spend the majority of my bandwidth here exposing Mary Kay, that your particular MLM is safe from me. Cuz it ain't. I already started a little research on Jafra, but it's taking me forever because I don't have unlimited hours to spend on this little hobby. ANYWAY, people have posted elsewhere that MK reps are going to the hospital wards where the cancer patients are, and are doing a "Satin Hands" treatment on them. They are also claiming to be "cancer survivors" themselves, in the hopes of building a relationship with the patient, and thereby gaining a customer. Problem is, some of these MK reps are lying about being cancer survivors. This is some pretty sick stuff, yo. Now, in this particular document, the Sales Director does not tell people to lie. She just says that she tells the patients she meets that "her grandfather died from cancer in 1994", while she is doing the hand lotion routine on them. (!!!!!!!) If I was in the cancer ward, struggling with that kind of illness, and some MK rep came to my room to squirt some lotion on my hands and tell me her grandfather died of cancer, I'd call security. How incredibly insensitive. CommentsThere are some things in this document that I would like to point out, not directly to do with cancer patients. First of all, Number 5 on the list: "5. We all have invested in Tupperware and Pampered Chef... Talk to their consultants and see if you can do some customer trading.... you would be surprised." In most cases, this is considered EXTREMELY unethical at best and illegal at worst. If I knew any consultant from any company (MLM or a real company) was giving out my name and phone number without my consent, that company is history in my opinion and I would not hesitate to file a complaint. (For all the good it would do.) I don't put my name on any mailing or email lists and I certainly don't give out my real email address except to trusted friends and family. I also don't enter into fake contests (especially with Scary Kay) to "win" a free makeover or whatever is being offered.
And then
this jumped out at me at the bottom: "Remember the worst they can say in NO,,,,
but you know no just means not now, and if you go to a place of business you
don’t need to get there number immediately because you know you can It just makes me ill that consultants have no respect for individuals who are fighting for their lives. This document trivializes the enormity of what is going on in the cancer patient's life at that time. Basically it says,"who cares about the fears and struggles that the patient is dealing with..let's just sell some product."
Exactly
what I was thinking. If I had cancer and was in the hospital for treatment, I
can only imagine how scared and anxious I would feel. Personally I always hated it when MK folk used the word "pamper." It sounded like diapers and that's what it reminded me of. I know. I could never use that word cuz it sounded soooo gay. Oh PC, taking advantage of cancer patients is disgusting. My dear MIL died of colon cancer. She lasted 1 year after her diagnosis. She did well for the first 8 months but the final four months, she steadily and rapidly declined. What she wanted most was to enjoy her family and to spend time with the ones she loved. It was a difficult time. My husband and his brother spent many nights away form their immediate families to care for their mom. She had to be physically carried places she needed to go because she had gotten too weak to even stand by herself. My husband and his brother would've flipped out if a MK consultant showed up in the guise of a pampering session trying to make a few bucks. IF ANY OF YOU BELIEVE THAT THIS IS COMMON IN ANY OF THE WELL KNOWN COMPANIES...ARBONNE, MARY KAY, ETC. YOU ARE WRONG!
No name,
Just go away. It is really sick to defend this. There is no excuse. I don't care
if it is not common. Just one person exhibiting this type of behavior is TOO
MANY. UUUGH! AAARGH! This is very disturbing to me. As a Direct Sales person, I have donated my services in many instances, with absolutely no attempt to sell anything. I have gone and PAMPERED mentally ill patients, painted nails at a fund raiser at my son's school, and much more. I have never approached a cancer patient under the guise of pampering, to sell them product and do not know of anyone else who has. I would never defend this behavior. In fact, I went looking for that consultant in an effort to contact her about this document. So, you can take back your snide comments. I do not agree with this any more than you do! Why not just donate the products if they really are concerned about the paitents? The document says this consultant used this approach when she moved in 2000. Given the high turnover rate of MLMers, she and her recruiter are probably long gone from MK. Or, perhaps she moved again. But, I googled the consultant's name and found four director sites linking to this document. I realize that is not many, but the main provider of websites for MK directors - Unitnet - won't show up in a search because it's a database-driven site. So, there are probably dozens or hundreds more directors promoting this approach. *I know. I could never use that word cuz it sounded soooo gay.*
LOL! I
thought I was the only who described things as "gay." LOL again. Also many MK
diatribes were completely Liberace gay, such as "Sue, this is Stephanie with
Mary Kay, I'm so excited about my new business!" Also bugging cancer patients is just horrible. I never went for that "bless others with your business" crap. You know what, the fact that ONE person is familiar with this is upsetting but the fact that several of us are aware of it through various means is despicable. I really don't care whether or not someone hasn't seen this document before, I've heard it with my own two ears on several occasions and that's enough for me on this topic. This is my favorite line in that document *I have planted seeds all over* Yeah so has my brother but ya don't hear him bragging. (just think about it) "I really don't care whether or not someone hasn't seen this document before, I've heard it with my own two ears on several occasions and that's enough for me on this topic." Princessa de Pinkfree, same here. I remember my ex-director saying the same thing. In addition, she did (and still does to my knowledge) promote selling Satin Hands to individuals that they could donate it to our local women's shelter as a "boost" to the women that are there. PUH-LEASE! These women don't want skincare and make-up. They want security and safety.
If this
document was written around 2000, it is quite possible that the director listed
is long gone from MK. (You know, that high turnover rate, and all.) NOT Pretty in Pink, I have to disagree with you on one teeny point. I think that donating skin care and makeup (of any kind, not specifically branded) does help them achieve a little sense of normalcy. Don't forget, many of these women ran out in the middle of the night with absolutely nothing. They obviously have no self-esteem already, so donating even the little tools that help them feel "pretty" or at least normal again isn't such a bad thing. My dad and his wife volunteer at a women and children's shelter of just this sort, and I'm getting ready to donate a whole bunch of clothes and toys. Maybe I'll throw in some samples too, just so they can wash their faces with something other than Ivory. (I'll take my contact info off the packs first, though, so it's just a gift and not a sales pitch).
I've been
in direct sales for 11 years and have never seen or heard of this approach. I always put all those free Clinique bags with all the new samples in with my donations--a lot of shelters keep their stuff like a "store", so that the person doesn't feel like they are taking whatever they can get, but they have a choice. But if you're buying Satin Hands instead of just giving the shelters the money....I'd say you're fooling yourself, the money is a lot more useful than some overpriced hand lotion. I'm all into smells, and that stuff doesn't even smell good to me. Pampered, ick. I think not. And if some Kaybot showed up in my family member's hospital room trolling for sales....it wouldn't be pretty (in pink or any other color!) I would like to tell "No Name" that LOTS of women in MLMs do this. I knew a girl who sold for Avon and she took her brochures to a hospice (hospice = place where people go to die). She always took her catalogs with her when she went to visit her sick friend. And passed them around. I thought it was in very poor taste. The word "pamper" creeps me out also. I find it insulting in a way. It goes along with the way that Mary Kay infantilizes women. Like the cheap little trinkets they offer women (cheap jewelry), silly contests, prizes, etc. and then that stupid word "pampering" - yes that is a diaper you put on a baby. I'm an adult and feel grossed out that someone thinks I need "pampering". Women does NOT equal "stupid child".
Something
else that is wrong with this whole cancer patient thing: usually consultants are
trained that if someone responds negatively--just let it go and move on.
Meaning: ignore that person's response. And why isn't hospital security throwing these MK women out on their big pink butts? It sounds as though they are essentially trespassing. yeah I wonder about that. Who on the hospital staff is giving the okay for this? The MK rep must say that she is just there to "pamper" the patients, and she probably says "I'm not here to sell anything"...in other words, she must lie about her intentions, no? Not really my best work, but I thought up a name. works for us ;) Luv your name!! ;-) "I would be curious as to where this document came from. There are no consultants listed on the Mary Kay consultant locator in the entire state of Florida with the names listed in the document." Umm, Margaret Gormly "Independent Senior Sales Director" is listed! "I went looking for that consultant in an effort to contact her about this document. So, you can take back your snide comments. I do not agree with this any more than you do!" Well, You can contact Margaret Gormly. Her cell number is even listed to make it even easier for you to catch up with her! ;-) I swear! you cannot win with you folks!!! Even when those of us in the hated industry agree with you, you still come at our throats. As for Ms. Gormly, she is listed as an adoptive director, I have no evidence that she knows of or condones the behavior. "As for Ms. Gormly, she is listed as an adoptive director, I have no evidence that she knows of or condones the behavior." But, she is still listed in the doc, nonetheless. Maybe you should give her a courtesy call about her name being mentioned in the doc, period. ;-) And who came at your throat?? I'm just trying to help you out since you were so set on contacting these people, geesh!!
"I swear! you cannot win with you folks!!!"
Actually,
No Name, if you are a MK consultant who thinks this cancer patient stuff is
sick, I congratulate you for having some sense in your head. An MK lady could visit the hospital, do her satin hands treatment on a patient, and then sell the patient several hundred dollars worth of product while the patient was doped up on medication. That should be CRIMINAL. How much lower can these pink women stoop? They are already crawling on their bellies. But the whole cancer patient thing ISN'T just limited to this one person. Think about it. Several people posting on this site alone have heard of that tactic being used. My own director encouraged that kind of behavior 3 years ago. Sadly, contacting one person is not going to put an end to it since the use of this is so widespread.
Gosh, I
guess some of you must really hate the 'Pampered Chef, huh? If I were to shop in a clothing store and an MK rep approached me in that store, I would immediately complain to the store manager AND if he refused to make her quit soliciting in the store, I would refuse to ever shop in that store again. Although I can't imagine too many shop owners allow this stuff. I'm the BC consultant who emailed this atrocious document to PC...I wouldn't necessarily call myself "biased" though--I would NEVER put a drop of MK on my face or body!--but as I have previously stated in other posts, I am a part of an MLM in which I am having a lot of fun and a great experience (I'm not seeking to be super-rich here; mainly enjoying discounts) but I do enjoy lurking around the unitnet site for interesting reading, and I just couldn't resist forwarding that nauseating document to PC. I figured she'd already seen it, but I just had to forward it to her...just in case she hadn't. In any event, I was looking forward to her comments. SICK, SICK, SICK. Trolling for customers in a CANCER WARD? I can't even come up with a word that describes just how horrible that is. Thanks for posting this, PC! I won't use or buy MK, I wouldn't even buy it off ebay. Because I don't want to support that company in any way, shape or form. Dear Jen, As a fellow Direct Seller, it's interesting that you would send in this document. Do you not realize that you will be the next target? You've especially opened things up with this confession. Other MLMs will be looking for documents on Arbonne to send in, and since you started it, you will have no one to blame but yourself. Don't think for a minute that there are not some very incriminating Arbonne docs available. How will you feel when those are posted and everyone infers that you and the other consultants, by association, are just like whomever wrote the doc? Even though I know SEVERAL interesting Arbonne stories, I would never send them in to this site, because I do not believe in what they do here, and I feel that those of us in Direct Sales should stick together in this situation. For everyone's information: After doing some research, I can share that the consultant who wrote this document is no longer with MK, and there were apparently some problems with her when she was. She does not represent the majority of that sales force, and other consultants and directors are disgusted by her acts as well. whoops...notice that Jen is with Beauti Control...same principle applies. She may be gone, but there are plenty of MKers out there that still believe in this disgusting tactic. You'd be surprised how popular it is amongst the Mary Kay force. She's definitely not the ONLY ONE! Instead of getting so defensive, why you don't you just accept the fact that it happens, and if you don't believe in doing it, then good for you. ;-) Because H8MK, I've never seen a document with this listed, and no one that I know does it, and I fell confident that I know far more consultants are directors than you do. This is what gets all of the MLMers so hot...anytime that you guys dig up something to post, you exact it on everyone in that company. It's like assuming that because someone in MK had a car accident, then all consultants are bad drivers. whoops, that's "feel", not felt. I would not be so foolish to say that it never happens, it's just not the norm. That's my point...and that the "majority" do not agree with the practice.
I'm sure
there are consultants who would not use this tactic, No Name. Thank you for not blanketing us all...I will fight things wrongs like this just as hard as you will. Hey, we agree on something :) woo-hoo!
Oh, and to
the anonymous person who says they won't buy MK because they don't want to
support the company: I wouldn't care if you knew EVERY SINGLE Mker out there. Sweetie, if you think Mary Kay is full of morals, you need to check out any of the NSD's sites on Unitnet. Their docs are full of unethical ways to make a buck. Regardless of how many or how few have tried to sell to cancer patients, I've seen enough for myself and read enough on their unitnet sites to not want to associate myself with that type of business or 'girls'. Haven't you heard that one rotten apple destroys the whole bunch? They may not try to sell to cancer patients personally, but you sure don't see anything forbidding consultants and directors from doing it. Nothing and i mean NOTHING you say will make me understand why you are so brainwashed. "She has such a giving heart. She is a blessing to many. I'm so glad she is in our unit. I asked her to share" These are the words used to describe her when introducing this document. It appears she was held in high esteem at least at first. She was asked to share her ideas on building new customers. This particular director thought them worthy of passing on to her unit as she gushes over the ideas. This document is in the training material section of several unitnet sites. If people are disgusted with this, they should do a better job of monitoring the material on their own site. If one is parading this as good ideas for getting customers then it makes sense that one agrees with the ideas. If not it shouldn't be posted to the site. How could someone who was thought so well of end up in the MK doghouse? Two things really bother me about this document: 1. - The consultant claims that she "had taught for ten years." I would love to know what she was teaching. It certainly wasn't spelling, grammar, or punctuation. 2. - Going into a cancer patient's room and touching the patient spreads germs. An ill person has a compromised immune system and can not afford the energy required to fight off a stray virus brought in by someone or transferred from one patient to another. How unsanitary can you get? Given how MK preaches sanitary practices in skin care classes, this practice of visiting hospitals should have been stopped in its tracks and never passed along as a good idea by anyone! "How could someone who was thought so well of end up in the MK doghouse?" She quit ordering or recruiting? hahaha "This is what gets all of the MLMers so hot...anytime that you guys dig up something to post, you exact it on everyone in that company." Show me ONE MK'er (Director on up) who does EVERYTHING by the book. The only reason I can conceive for the feelings and posts here is because there are NONE, or very close to it, that demonstrate completely honest and moral business practices. The management in MK is the problem. From NSD's on down there are a multitude of issues which cast a negative light on the MLM. Many people don't realize this fact until AFTER they have become involved. Obviously the hurt feel that they need to get the word out to help prevent it from happening to others. I guess in essence, WE are trying to either fix the problem or divulge some of the horrible things that occur, to leave our own minds at ease. I hope my comments can keep a Kaybot busy reading and responding to them. If I can accomplish that then she wouldn't be out scamming another potential victim, because she is too busy reading here. I believe that is a good thing and Kaybots read on. You should really know as much about the organization you work for as you possibly can. I hope your skin doesn't feel too slimy when you are done reading this stuff. The fact of the matter is that if MK were as straight up as the public is led to believe, there wouldn't be ANY anti-MK websites. The anti-MK websites existence alone, speaks volumes to the issue. In all of my reading on the internet, I have yet to find ONE, that's right ONE, person who will give an honest description of the opportunity, particularly the money aspect of the biz. There have been some Directors who have started to discuss the issue. When they realize they are discussing it with someone who knows a little about it, they find reasons to end the discussion. They realize that they are shooting themselves in the foot if they continue to divulge the true financial aspects of the biz. 50% profit on sales is what the pink folks advertise, but that is so far from the truth. Expenses eat you up PERIOD! The percentage of true profit from sales, ends up being so dismal after expenses are deducted, that Directors wouldn't dare tell the truth. They couldn't recruit successfully if they were up front about it. The above is ONLY about the sales aspect of the product and doesn't even address inventory loading which is likely the single largest negative issue in ALL of MK. "Quotas", Hmmm, I thought MK didn't have quotas. YADA YADA YADA YADA YADA YADA, THE HIDDEN NEGATIVES ARE ALMOST ENDLESS!!! Seriously though, the Pink folks should extract their heads from their *sses and take several deep breaths. Most of your posts here strongly indicate severe oxygen deprivation. *She quit ordering or recruiting? hahaha* LOL my thought was that she quit doing those idiotic dances at unit meetings.
NO NAME
SAID: "whoops...notice that Jen is with Beauti Control...same principle
applies." The fact that the document suggesting trolling for cancer patients in hospitals is still posted on unitnet tells me that it IS, in fact, STILL CONDONED--simply by the fact it's still posted there, regardless of whether or not the original author is still pink. Ooops...the above post was from me! No "no-name" here! :)
