How were you recruited? Tell us all the details.
I reached out to my former MK consultant to get started. I was not recruited.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I have read all the horrible stories on here and Pink Truth and it really makes me sad that these women have been treated this way. It was all surprising to me because my experience has been wonderful from the start. My recruiter is incredibly supportive and my “adoptive” director has given me a lot of good advice along with the other ladies at our meetings. No one has pressured me to buy anything – I bought everything on my own. I asked my director to help me with my first order and she simply asked how much I wanted to spend and then told me the best things to get for that money. They have loaned me product when I did not have what a customer wanted, I am invited to meetings and not “required” to attend.
What are you doing now?
I am still working full time and getting my MK business started.

My only advice is this…Question everything and remember…you don’t work for or report to your recruiter or your director. This is your business and if you are not being treated like you think you should, find another director to work with or reach out to other consultants. It is unfortunate that these people are not ethical in the way they recruit and their contracts should be terminated. I just wanted to put out there that not everyone has a bad experience and I am so thankful for the people who helped me get started!

I’ve been fortunate with a very “laid-back” director as well. She’s good hearted, and never pushes for anything. And that’s exactly the reason why I chose her (yep, I wasn’t recruited either). I think you make important points about taking a stand and not being pressured to do anything you don’t want to do. I don’t attend the meetings, because they are not convenient for me. When I was asked if I wanted to do a “debut,” I said there was no need. I have hair to my shoulders (someone on the board made comments about “having” to cut your hair) and I wear pants everywhere. LOL! Of course, I’ve been in business for myself (as a graphic designer and editor) for YEARS… So I know the ropes of having your own business, and I understand all the ups and downs. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who felt burned by MK had far different experiences than we did. If I had advice to those out there in MK right now, I would repeat YOUR advice… and also ask them to become educated in having your own business (read, research, and find small business mentors) as opposed to having strictly a “Mary Kay business,” and I think it will more fully prepare you for what you are getting into (or help you decide to get out). Being your own employer is NOT for everyone, but I know a lot of MK reps will paint the picture that it’s easy (NO business is) and for everybody (it’s NOT). And that’s wrong. Without a doubt, I’m the “anti-Mary Kay consultant,” (as I like to call myself to others) and I’d have it no other way!
