I had the same type experience you did. A Consultant who, more or less made it seem like a piece of cake to sell Mary Kay. She never held any meetings, never showed us how to apply make-up, never really did anything for me and the 2 recruits that signed up under me. We were basically on our own. I spent over $1,200 on Mary Kay Products just so that I could win a trip to Jamaica, which my Director promised me she would pay the airline fare to Florida. Of course, she didn’t and we never went on the trip. I wasn’t able to sell anything because all I ever heard was…”I already have my own MK Consultant.” It caused me financial ruin and I had to sell my products below the price of what I paid for them. Too bad I didn’t know about Ebay then. I had hundreds of products. I love Mary Kay and have been using it for over 20 years but would NEVER sign up to sell it again. It is not worth it and we just don’t get the Support we need. Since Mary Kay died, her Company seems to have gone downhill. They are discontinuing products I have used for years which is very frustrating to me. Why did they have to discontinue the Cream Foundation in Soft Ivory and the Charcoal Eyeliner pencil….2 of my favorite products????? That was such a disappointment to me. They need to take a hard look at all the changes they are making and ask their customer base if what they are doing is what is best for the company. I will soon have to find a different brand of eyeliner. Very sad!!!! Brenda

Brenda, I’m sorry you ended up with debt from your MK experience. Did you know you could return your product to MK for 90% buyback of anything you had purchased in the past 12 months.  Your director and recruiter would have conveniently not told you this so they wouldn’t have a charge back on their commission earned.

Also MK has no idea what sells to customers because THEIR customer is always the consultant
and since most of them are in the “pink fog” they do exactly what their director tells them which is to order all the new Limited Edition products before they “run out”.   Also typically your sales director would place your first order and she has no idea what kind of clients you “might” have so she just loads you up with a bunch of crap just to get an order in, knowing that if you do sell anything you’ll probably have to place another order just to fill your customer’s order.  Eureka!  You place another order  and she makes more commission!

MK develops and markets their products from a “dark closet” since they never really know what the “customer” wants. The only data they have on “what’s hot’ and “what’s not” is from the consultants orders and since they fil their heads with such nonsense, everything is a “hot seller”.
    What a joke!

Brenda, why don’t you join us in the Forum? You’ll find lots of support an a great bunch of ladies who talk about lot’s more than MK!  Just click on the FORUM button in the black tool bar at thet op of the page.   I hope to chat with you soon!

I read all you ladies wrote and i don’t agree. Being a consultant with marykay is like having a business of your own. I believe if you run a business you will put in effort to make sure it stands and that applies also in marykay. I am a registered nurse with a husband and 3 kids and have been a marykay consultants for about 2 years. I never ran into debts all i did was proper planning. Alot of people fail in marykay because they refuse to plan and set goals. It doesn’t work that way. I believe all you ladies complaining if you searched your heart you will find out you never put in the right effort into your marykay business.
Nothing good in life comes easy.
If you get promoted in a company and say to your self because i am already promoted i will have to work only 10hrs instead of 40hrs hours, you won’t only loose that position but your job as well so that apply to marykay too. some people get to the top quickly in marykay while others take their time to get to the top. So i doesn’t mean that some of you didn’t make it others didn’t

It’s LIKE having a business of your own, Susan, but it ISN’T. Just like margarine is LIKE butter but it’s still margarine.

Why don’t you ask the millions of people who have joined MLMs over the decades how much it’s “their own business” when the company goes out of business?! Since when do you own a business if it can be take away from you ? That’s ain’t your business.

MK is MLM. Once you figure this out, lots of things make sense.

    Susan,

Our truth is negative to you.  My advice to you is don’t quit your day job.  Do we expect to have it easy?  I don’t think so.  I have been working since I was 15 years old and I am 25 now.  I have my degree in Psychology and I am working on my Masters in Counseling.  I don’t expect things to be handed to me on a silver platter because that is not how I was raised.  If we are being so negative then why are you here?  Weren’t you taught to be around positive people or is our truth giving you a reality check?  I was in Mary Kay a year and I didn’t go into debt because I saw it for what it was.  It took me a little over a thousand dollars, but that is better than being in the tens of thousands of dollars.  Mary Kay is not your business.  If it was then they wouldn’t be able to terminate you for selling the product on your own terms, you would be able to sell it at a yard sale, set up your own store if you wanted to, sell it at trade shows, on the internet, and anywhere you want to sell it at.  I own my own business and it is very successful.  I can do what I want when I want with it as long as it isn’t illegal.  The difference between your so called business and my business is that I can advertise where I want, when I want, and how I want and not be sent a letter as long as I am not soliciting.  I am not restricted by a contract because it is “my business”.  So, please don’t give us that it’s “my business” because it isn’t.  At any given time Mary Kay can terminate your contract when they get good and ready.  The company can take your business away.

So, in other words, don’t come here and judge us because you don’t know us at all.  We are very smart, real, and down to earth women.  Don’t tell us what you feel we didn’t do with our “Mary Kay Business”.  We are very smart women who didn’t let ourselves get scammed for too long.  We learned our lessons and we are sharing them with everyone so hopefully they don’t fall into the same trap or go into debt with this company.  So, we don’t need an attitude adjustment because we are happy with our lives and we are helping others see this company for what it is.  The MLM, system is set up for most to fail.  That isn’t our fault.  That is the set up of the module.  So, again, we have our priorities in order and we are making a difference and saving the next victim from making our mistake.  Goodluck to you and “your business”.

    Susan,

It’s great that you’ve had a good experience with MK. I agree that nothing in life comes easy and that setting goals and accountability for yourself is neccesary to be sucessful.

I believe all you ladies complaining if you searched your heart you will find out you never put in the right effort into your marykay business. - Susan

This statement is unfair and hurtful to many on this site. Especially those who gave it all they had, followed every guideleine & script and still failed.

It’s not right for you to judge them like this, but is perfectly typical of every current MKer who cannot admit that there are problems within the organization. The problem can’t be MK, it must be everyone else!!!  THOUSANDS of women say otherwise, on this and many other sites.

This site is not a MK bashing ground. You’ll find some on it who are PUC’s, and many who still use the product after having a bad experience trying to sell it. This site is a place for people who have bad experiences to share and heal, and to help others from making the same mistakes they have.

We welcome you to share your sucess and experience, but belittling others efforts won’t get you anywhere.

I am glad there is a place for people to heal from a bad experience.  I am currently having one of those with my SD and SSD.  But from doing the research from these sites, they have helped me realize that this is my business and I need to work it, with or without the support I may receive.  I have actually found my support throuhg other channels instead of the proper ones.  I have a great NSD, and future NSD, the problem is I am lost somewhere at the bottom in a “hurry and recruit” state, when I really love the products and have fun selling them.  I may or may not ever make it to SD, but I have learned from reading this site and others a few good principles for my business.  1.  It is my business, and I must be the one to work it.  2.  Don’t go into debt over the business, let the business pay for itself (i.e.  don’t think I have to earn every prize they offer for an order)  3. Because I am researching outside of just the pink bubble (which is fun to be in), this will only make me a better consultant, director, etc…

Like, the person above, I am a nurse with three boys and a husband.  I love being a nurse too, just not full time.  So I will be able to balance both.  Thanks for your input above and I am hoping to learn from your experiences.  I am also going to take some good advice from my future NSD, that is to put my blinders on and “Run my own Race” along with the 3 things I mentioned before.

    Thank you Ladies,

    Hello all,

I am so happy that I found this website.  I have been a Mary Kay Consultant since November 2008; consequently, I have felt many highs and lows since that time.  I have read horror stories which have resulted in doubts, but then I remember who I am and what I am made of and my perspective returns.

I sold over $3000 in my 1st quarter in business, and yes it was hard work, but it very rewarding too.  I believe in the products, in my view they are not mediocre, they are top notch so I can sell them with an open heart.  All of my customers were happier after I delivered their products, always their free gift and extra samples.

I guess what I am trying to say is everyone deserves to have their voice heard.  I am all grown up and went into opening my business with my eyes wide open.  I say dont sweat the small stuff; afterall, it was my decision to start my business.  I am having fun, and I love sharing the skin care and cosmetics with the women I encounter.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my position that being a Mary Kay Consultant is what you make it. And, I choose to make it a success for myself and my children.

I “DECIDED” to become a part of Mary Kay in August  of 1994.  I became a Director in September of 1995.  Won my 1st of 4 Cadillacs in March of 1996.  Was Head of My Class and #1 in the Nation out of my debuting class of Directors.  Was in the Circle of Achievement for 4 consequtive years.  Had 3 Offspring Directors, 2, 2nd Line Directors (one of which was a Cadillac Director and in the Half Million Dollar Circle of Excellence her 1st year as a Director, as well as her 1st year in the business.
With all due respect, the website and chat room, is a haven to support mediocrity and to have a place where others will support the old “whoa is me” sob story.
Instead of bashing Mary Kay, your director, inventory or whatever else you want to bash or blame, why not just say: it wasn’t for me because I wasn’t willing to work that hard.
I worked my Mary Kay Business with passion, determination and with a desire to win, all while working full-time (50-60 hours per week) at Merrill Lynch.  By the time I quit my job at Merrill Lynch, I was already making $6,000+ as a director with MK.
I was diagnosed with presumptive MS in 1997 and worked and maintained Cadillac status until 2006.  Once it became too difficult for me to be “Effective” as a Leader, I made the decision to resign my position.  I mean I could barely walk, my speech & ability to write were impaired, I had fallen about 500 times, moved to a new city, 1,100 miles away from my family (as a single woman) and no friends and rebuilt my area from not even meeting minimum production.  I wanted success & I wanted it bad enough to work through pain, frustration and adversity.
Bottom line:  My initial investment: $1,800…EVERY decision I made was MY decesion.  No one forced me to work hard.  No one forced me to re-invest.  No one forced me to recruit.  No one made me do anything I wasn’t willing to do or wanted to do based on what I wanted to achieve.  Anybody that becomes a part of MK or any Network Marketing Company for that matter, has the SAME EXACT possibilities as anyone else.
Please stop enabling each other to be losers and play the blame game.  Take responsibility for your own actions.  Be grown up about it and just say: “I wasn’t willing to work that hard.”

Wow!  You ladies are incredible.  I appreciate your well wishes for me in my situation, but I assure you that no matter the challenges I face, I in NO WAY have a disability.  Instead this condition has given me the “Ability” to empower others and give them permission (by example) to live beyond difficulty and adversity.
I didn’t nor do I need Merril Lynch, their benefits, retirement, healthcare, sick pay, vacation time or Social Security,  Based upon the effort I put into the Mary Kay business that I built, I was able to put away a very sizable nest egg as well as afford my own benefits, take all the paid sick time when I needed to and took vacation on my own time and did for literally 2 years without missing a beat.  By the way, if I had stayed at Merrill Lynch there is no way that I would have been able to maintain a 60-80 hour work week under extremely stressful work conditions in my situation.  I watched them fire people for having migraines, so I would have really been in the cold.
I took full advantage of every opportunity Mary Kay offered to me.  The training & journey to my personal best was worth every dollar spent, every frustration faced, and every minute I spent building my organization.  It gave me the necessary mindset needed to deal with what I deal with everyday.  It gave me the platform in which to build my now $250,000+ a year consulting firm.  Luck had nothing to do with my success.  I took care of business and worked it!  When I couldn’t work it, my business took care of me.  Tam, MK did work for me, I resigned because I could not effectively, to my standard, support the women in my organization.  MY CHOICE!
BC, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. ATTEMPT TO MASK WHAT?
No where in my statement did you read a victim, blame it on someone else story.  I walk and live fabulously in my situation, high heels and all.  Hide behind?  Baby Please!  I still walk with pride, without assistance or a wheel chair, even though literally each step could be my last!  Yes, it’s that critical!  I don’t need or want to hide behind a situation that has brought so much power & possibility, through the pain.  Anyway, I wish you all the best!

I love how most of you on here categorize anyone in Mary Kay as “they”. Not everyone and everybody in Mary Kay is the same way. Mary Kay is what you make it…everyone starts out on equal terms. There are good and bad people everywhere you go, it is no different in this business. I personally don’t have anyone telling me what I have to do, I do what I want to when I want to. I don’t order more than I need and my director doesn’t push anything on me. I don’t recruit folks because I am not concerned with that aspect of Mary Kay. But please don’t pile everyone into one big “they are the devil” category. It isn’t like that for everyone. People keep saying that you don’t own your own business in MK, but with every business you have rules to follow, rules are everywhere. You can pretty much do what you want with your business as long as you follow some basic rules. Do your research before you join if you don’t like the rules then don’t join, simple as that. If your director is telling you something you don’t like then speak up for yourself and tell her how it is going to be, no one is your boss but you.

There is nothing in MK that supports their printed, motto “God 1st, family 2nd and career 3rd”.  Many women can attest to working on Sunday or even all weekend, being told by their SD that they should lie to their husband, reschedule their child’s Birthday parties, hire a sitter to take care of their children, take on debt without consulting their spouse,  hide credit card statements and even promotes the “HUP” plan in selling product to women!
HUP plan = paying for your large MK purchase with a “little” cash, a “little” by check and the balance by credit card and your Husband Unaware Plan will allow you to purchase without your husband knowing how much you spent!  Is that deceitful pr what?  Does God condone lying?  I think not!

Actually Lipstick you have no idea who I am or anything else about me. I actually care a lot about a lot of things. As I have said before not all people in Mary Kay are the same but you don’t seem to want to believe that fact. All Mary Kay people are the same in your eyes. Let us all applaud you for you are so smart that you got out of Mary Kay. You just bunch everyone in together as “they” or “kaybots” (what a stupid name) and put EVERYONE down in Mary Kay. I am assuming that you see everything in black and white and that there are no other colors in between. I can see some of your points and agree that there are some women like that but AGAIN not all of them are. But I have yet to read anything written by you that suggests there are some good women in Mary Kay.

No one ever told me to do this. My director never bothered me, she knew not to because I told her I would do what I wanted when I wanted. My recruiter is a wonderful lady who helped me tremendously and would never ask me to do any of this, she just made director and hasn’t even asked me what I was planning on doing with my ordering. I guess I have not had the problems other ladies have had because I just don’t see all the negative things going on that you speak of. Lipstick wrote “HUP plan = paying for your large MK purchase with a “little” cash, a “little” by check and the balance by credit card and your Husband Unaware Plan will allow you to purchase without your husband knowing how much you spent! Is that deceitful or what? Does God condone lying? I think not!”

I heard this immediately from SD and it was repeated at EVERY guest event!

Who Cares, if you don’t want to be lumped into the “kaybot” group, don’t attack.  We have posters on here who are very respectful and are in Mary Kay and, no that doesn’t mean they have to agree with everything we say, we can certainly agree to disagree politely.  Our “message” is to be your own person and not get sucked into the excitement and conned into ordering huge sums of inventory.  If you have not done so, I applaud you as well.
I will acknowledge NOT all IBC’S are KAYBOTS.

Tam, I wasn’t speaking to you and I believe I was attacked first because of the name I chose to put in on this website. I just figured my name didn’t matter and put WhoCares not really intending to offend anyone, yet I was immediately attacked for using that name. Why would me attacking anyone place me in the “kaybot” group anyway? What sense does that make? Go back and read my original post, I wasn’t attacking anyone. Thank you for the rest of your post by stating “I will acknowledge NOT all IBC’S are KAYBOTS”. That was the only point I was trying to make.

WhoCares, please go back and read my post I said MOST, not all!  And the reason we call “them” Kaybots is because they go to the meetings hang on every word said and go right out and repeat word for word what they were told, sort of like robots, so “Kaybots” is merely a combination of Mary Kay and robot.
You aren’t attending meetings so you haven’t seen that side of MK.  We all were once Kaybots until we finally saw the light and were able to break through the pink fog and into the clear blue skies of reality,
I once read that “your perception is your reality”, so I can only respectfully disagree with you about MK .  I once was all “rah-rah and “positive” about MK too and just certain that I would be one of the successful ones who would make it to SD and beyond.

Stupid. Anyone who comes on here and says “I LOVE MK AND I MAKE 9 MILLION DOLLARS A DAY” is just stupid. Sweet Jesus.

Lipstick wrote “WhoCares…your name speaks more about you than you know and it speaks the basic philosophy of MK! Who cares about you as long as I get mine is the REAL motto that most “career” MKers follow.”

Lipstick, that was your response to my very first post, which was polite and stating my opinion. As I was telling Tam I didn’t attack anyone you pounced on me because of a name I chose to put in on this website. I was responding to her post telling me if you don’t want to be lumped into the “kaybot” group, don’t attack. I was simply trying to say I didn’t attack anyone I was the one who was attacked. You attacked my character based on your own presumptions which were loosely based on the name I chose for this website.

Yes I fully understand the word usage of “kaybot”. I was just wondering how me presumably attacking someone on here placed me in that category as Tam suggested.

BC, I think you need to look harder for some heros. Melissa’s statement is hardly hero worthy.

WhoCares said:  Blah Blah Blah….Yeah I knew that name would draw out more of your sarcasm…just too funny to ruffle your feathers!
But please don’t pile everyone into one big “they are the devil” category.

I love how most of you on here categorize anyone in Mary Kay as “they”.

You just bunch everyone in together as “they” or “kaybots” (what a stupid name) and put EVERYONE down in Mary Kay.

It seems you want to argue because you can’t think of anything concrete to say that proves we are wrong.
Truth is truth it isn’t a color.  But if you want to make the comparison between what I speak and colors, then you realize that black is black, white is white. Truth is truth and deceit is deceit.  Nothing is sort of black or sort of deceitful.
A statement is either truthful as written  or it is false.  I speak of my experiences and so do the others on this board.  If your experience has been different, it has nothing to do with mine. We had different experiences.  Mine are just as valid as yours.  I will say that there are fewer people talking about how wonderful MK is than those who say it was the best thing that ever happened to them.
Making the statement that those who had bad experiences were just not working their business like a business and therefore failed, does not invalidate their experience or make it incorrect.  Making the assumption that those who failed didn’t properly investigate is lumping everyone into the same category.
My real question is this:  “If everything is so wonderful in MK why are you on an anti-MK site?  Did you fail to investigate thoroughly?  Do you think you might have made a mistake?  Are you looking for real answers that you aren’t finding in MK?”
If you don’t want to be lumped into the same category as “Kaybots” say something original instead of making statements about how somebody failed to investigate or are placing blame when they really didn’t work it like a business.
I take full responsibility for my decision to join  MK and for my failure to see through the “dreams” painted to the reality that they were just dreams and I was stupid enough to believe the deception and lies in MK  i believed if I just worked a little harder or a little longer, I could be successful.  Pointing out the inconsistencies in MK scripted statements is not placing blame it is merely exposing the truth…there is no 50% profit to be made in MK or any other MLM.  No matter how hard or how long you work, there is no 50% profit.

Pull your claws back in, whocares. You’ve been passive-agressively trolling around here for awhile now, and it’s already old.

Unlike you, Melissa has the balls to call what’s really going on, and I respect that.

You state you do what you want with to do when you want to do it, and apparently you want to spend your time trolling strangers. Must be a fulfilling life you lead.

Agreed BC, …Talking about it and doing it are two very different things, at least WhoCares excels at something: talking about it…from her posts you can see she has not really experienced MK.  If she paid attention she would  realize nobody here is interested in what she says…as SHE STATES NOTHING  OF RELEVANCE!
The next time I need an uninformed opinion, I will know where to go…WhoCares !
