What is the Best Way to Tell a Mary Kay Lady to BUZZ OFF?!

Written by L J on August 31, 2008 – 1:07 pm -

I received this question from a visitor named Kristen yesterday and it made me laugh out loud! Here’s her entire message:

What is best way to tell a Mary Kay lady to BUZZ OFF? This woman keeps bothering me, wanting me to sell MK. She says things like- “Oh you would be so fun to work with!” and “You’d be really great!” She ends every message with a chipper “I look forward to hearing from you!” I keep politely hinting to her that I’m too busy, but she still keeps contacting me anyway. I thought I would ask all of you- what would YOU say to get an MK lady to GO AWAY! :)

Well? What would YOU say?    Help Kristen out. I’m sure she’d appreciate it!   :-D

    Kristen,

I can think of all kinds of rude ways to tell her to buzz off, but that would just make her mad!

What about just telling her, that you are glad she loves her MK careeer, and you respect her choice, but you hope she will respect you in the same way and quit talking to you about MK.

Tell her you are very firm in your belief that it is not for you and that IF you should change your mind, she will be the first person you call.

Remind her that those who have bad experiences with a company or a product are 10x more likely to speak to others about their bad experience than those who have had positive experiences.

Tell her you value her friendship (if you do) and that you do not want to hear any more about MK or the opportunity because you don’t want to have a negative experience to tell everyone about.

Thank her for her concern and again tell her you expect her to respect that you are not interested and you know she understands and values your friendship.

If she persists after that, then tell her she has left you no choice, and if she persists in calling you, you will report her for telephone harrassment and that you DO NOT look forward to hearing from her again.

  2. Kelly MonsterID Icon Kelly Says:

I find being completely bold always helps. Simply tell her, “I’m not interested”. What’s wrong with telling her that? Don’t be scared of how it might make her feel because she doesn’t care how you feel. You’re just a recruit to her, nothing more. If you don’t want to do it - don’t do it. Besides, those people are used to rejection. If you had done this in the first place, she wouldn’t be calling you anymore. You’re actually leading her on, ya know? Good Luck!!! :-)

  3. Carol MonsterID Icon Carol Says:

Yes, absolutely tell her you’re not interested.  Ever.  You can be polite, she is after all just another victim of the pink machine, but be definite.

I guess if that doesn’t work, be less polite.  Hopefully it won’t come to that.

  4. Trixie MonsterID Icon Trixie Says:

It’s most awful when people who are not interested don’t just say “No, Thank You, I’m just not interested.  I will let you know if I ever want to try anything.”  When they act interested and lead you on, cancel time after time, tell you they’ll call back (and don’t), don’t show up, etc. is the worst. Be polite, but firm.

  5. Former MK Lady MonsterID Icon Former MK Lady Says:

You have to tell her “No.” Until she hears that word her Director who is her Divine Being right now will not let her accept your hints as an answer. You have to say the word No.

  6. Tam MonsterID Icon Tam Says:

I agree wtih Former MK Lady.  “No (thank you - if you like)” is the ONLY answer for which they do not have a come back script.

  7. sickofpink MonsterID Icon sickofpink Says:

I agree!  Tell her NO, thank you.  And if she doesn’t like that, ask her for her phone number and call her and give her the amway pitch - tell her you want her to work with YOU!!!  :)  Just stick to your guns, you’ll be fine.  Be consistent, be persistent, just say no.

  8. Former Pink Attack Dog MonsterID Icon Former Pink Attack Dog Says:

I sold Mary Kay for about 2 years.  The entire time I was going to meetings (which the SD charged us money to attend), I kept hearing over and over about how stupid and ridiculous Avon is.  My suggestion would be to tell her, “No thank you.  Avon charges WAY less than you do!”

  9. Proud2bePink MonsterID Icon Proud2bePink Says:

I find it sad that you all are spending so much time being negative… have you ever considered the fact that some MK ladies actually LOVE what they do and thus would love to help other women find something that helps them also? Not everyone is selfish or money-motivated. There are a whole lot of caring, wonderful MK women out there, and if you would channel your energy toward helping yourself instead of tearing down others for trying to help you, you would be in a much happier place!

  10. Sassy_C MonsterID Icon Sassy_C Says:

Proud….so you think we are negative…hmm. I can see why you think that. But ask yourself, why is there a need to “find a way to tell the MK lady to buzz off?”
Because a polite NO is never enough….I was taught to always call more than once….I never did because I felt it boardered on harassment. I’m glad you love what you do and I hope that you are the exception to the rule. :)

  11. Tam MonsterID Icon Tam Says:

    Proud2bepink,

The e-mail from Kristen states, ” This woman keeps bothering me, wanting me to sell MK.”

If someone shows an interest, I can see why you would  ”offer them the opportunity”.  Obviously, this is not the case.

I don’t believe being honest is negative.  JMO.

  12. fightingfatigue MonsterID Icon fightingfatigue Says:

“I keep politely hinting to her that I’m too busy, but she still keeps contacting me anyway.”

Just be honest with her.  Hinting around that you are not interested isn’t going to get the message across to her.  You need to flat out tell her you are not interested and if you do not want her to contact you any longer you need to let her know that too.

  13. Bleep MonsterID Icon Bleep Says:

First of all, you say you have been “hinting” her but the woman is not a mind reader. I know I’ve told several people that I’m too busy at the moment because I genuinely am, not because I’m trying to get rid of them. Maybe your hints are not as obvious as you think they are.

If you are not interested in whatever she is offering, just say so. Don’t be rude about it, just explain that it is something you are not interested in and that you will appreciate it if she stops calling you (or bringing the subject up if she is your friend).

By doing this, you are doing both of you a favor. You stop receiving annoying calls and she stops wasting her time on you with the hope that someday you may say yes.

Put aside whatever you may have against Mary Kay and think that you are dealing with a human being that has feelings just like you and who is just trying to make a living. She may be one of those evil sneaky sales people but she may also be an honest person trying to work her business the best she can. Just treat her as you would like to be treated.

  14. Lipstick MonsterID Icon Lipstick Says:

There are so many scripts in MK on selling, recruiting, booking, that all say, keep on asking until she says NO three times.

NO means NO, the first time everytime!  Maybe means maybe, yes means yes…it’s not that hard.
What is wrong with a company that teaches keep on asking until she says NO 3 times…that’s why MK leaves a bad taste for so many, they feel they were pushed and hassled into the decision to join!

All they really want is for the MK lady to go away!

  15. MoreThanALipstickPusher MonsterID Icon MoreThanALipstickPusher Says:

If you can not write a check for $100 right now and be positive that it will clear immediately, then maybe you need Mary Kay.  I was presented the opportuntiy with Mary Kay a little over one year ago. I said that I was too busy. I made a choice and started my Mary Kay business in June 2008. My only regeret is that I did not start in March of 2007.  Situations change from month to month. Mary Kay is a company that preaches God First, Family second, Career third. My former employeer preached company first, family second and God who?  Now, everyone is entitled to their own oppinion but please be well informed.  You have to admit, you will not become a Millionaire by simply punching someones time clock. The wealthy become wealthy by either winning the lotto OR owning their own business and making informed choices.  Anything worth having has to be worked for.  How many companies reward you for each accomplishment? How many companies grant you 50% cash back in all sales? Do your company yield 4 to 13% in commision each month and every month? Can you write off your everyday pleasantries on your taxes per year? Can you write off a portion of your mortgage, utilities, cell phone bill, and meals? Can you work part time hours and bring home a full time paycheck? Will your company lease a car for you, pay the note, taxes, registration, and 80% percent of your insurance? That is just the tip of the ice burge. If you cannot answer YES to ALL of my questions, then you are not informed at all. Now shifting gears, there is a difference between being pushy and being passionate. No consultant should make you feel pressured into buying and becoming her business parter. That is not how we should be represented. An apology is due. Simply tell her that you are not interested in selling Mary Kay.  Even opt out of her emails. She should respect your decision and leave you at peace. It’s all in God’s time.
P.S. I really enjoy making my own schedule and being a CAREER MOM! I rock my 3 and 4 year old during the day and work 3 hours four evenings per week per max. My 7 year old come home to hot meals and a refreshed Momma to help him with his home work! One tank can last two weeks in my Navigator verses two tanks per week!

Hold it proud2bepink, this is a discussion on how to tell an MK lady to BACK OFF, this question was asked of us. You have no right to tell us that we are being negative! What, you want us not to listen to this person and tell her to say yes? That’s why websiteslike this exist, because people like YOU don’t listen to NO!!!! ARG!!!!!!

  17. WhatwasIthinking MonsterID Icon WhatwasIthinking Says:

Morethanalipstickpusher, this is why this poor soul had to ask advice, because of cult members like you who don’t know how to HEAR the word NO! How dare you post your idiotic retoric on a thread that is talking about how to say NO. What do you frigging pink Kaybots not get!!!!!! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO. There I repeated it 7 times, do you get it now?????????   ARG!!!!!!!

  18. WhatwasIthinking MonsterID Icon WhatwasIthinking Says:

OMG I just reread your post! What a frigging joke. So you tell her that it’s alright to say no, the you say “It’s all in Gods time”. So again typical, you are not willing to let it go! SHE SAID NO!!!!!! LEAVE HER ALONE!!!!!!!
god has NOTHING to do with this!!!!!!!! MK and God are NOT hand in hand!

  19. MoreThanALipstickPusher MonsterID Icon MoreThanALipstickPusher Says:

Dont allow your ignorance to show honey. Keep that to yourself. Obvisously your panties got bunched before you read my intire message and started blurting out frustrations of a mad broke woman.

  20. MoreThanALipstickPusher MonsterID Icon MoreThanALipstickPusher Says:

All I am saying ladies, with any choice you make in life be open minded in well informed. It’s sad that a woman has to post a blog for advise on how to say no. Just say it! NO! Done deal! Life goes on.

  21. WhatwasIthinking MonsterID Icon WhatwasIthinking Says:

Darlin’ only an ignorant woman would beelieve in all that MK crap and not see the light. You obviously didn’t read my last post, I was saying that you gave me more amunition! Go back to your unitnet site where you belong, because you sure as hell don’t belong here! Oh and honey your ignorance is showng, I make WAY more money and work WAY less in my job now! Oh and I LOVE my job!!!!!

  22. Tam MonsterID Icon Tam Says:

Morethanalipstickpusher - “If you can not write a check for $100 right now and be positive that it will clear immediately, then maybe you need Mary Kay.”

How do you pay for your starter kit if you don’t have $ 100?  What about inventory?  Mary Kay IS NOT a save-all get rich quick deal!  Heck, it’s not even break even slow deal!  It’s a flat out, go in the hole deal!

  23. MoreThanALipstickPusher MonsterID Icon MoreThanALipstickPusher Says:

Hey Ladies! I just decided to check back in on the conversation at hand. Tam, your opinion is respected. I have ran across women who have tried to be a MK consultant and were not successful.  No one said that MK is a get rich scheme. It’s marketing. Just like the Wal Marts and Targets in your life. Mary Kay is not for everyone.  Neither is flipping burgers or going to medical school. Whatever you do make it work for you and be happy doing it! Life is too short.  Whatwasithinking, you are loaded with first grade name calling, run sentences, and anger. It’s great that you love your job. You are supposed to. I love working for myself. To each her own. Get your job to finance you getting your GED. Your english is terrible and it shows.

  24. SassyC MonsterID Icon SassyC Says:

More than a lIpstick pusher……you brought WWIT”S wrath upon yourself. You come to a place that you know is anti MLM (which includes MK) you bait with MK scripts and then what exactly did you expect?  If I read your post correctly you’ve only been in MK since June of this year….Hmm. Give it another 6 months tops and I’m certain that you will tire of all the MK pink BS. You are welcome here whether you love MK or not. Many people have come before….educated themselves to the real MK business and then made their choices. Some have stayed with MK aware of the pitfalls and others have packed up their inventory and shipped it back. What ever your choice may be you are welcome…..so play nice! :)

  25. L J MonsterID Icon L J Says:

“No one said that MK is a get rich scheme. It’s marketing.

Oh really? From my experience that’s what all the directors try to get you to think.

    It’s not marketing, it’s sales. It’s MLM. There’s a difference.

“I have ran across women who have tried to be a MK consultant and were not successful.

“...you are loaded with first grade name calling, run sentences, and anger.

You write things like THIS and you have the nerve to criticize someone else on their English?!
    Give me a break!

  26. Lipstick MonsterID Icon Lipstick Says:

Dont allow your ignorance to show honey. Keep that to yourself. Obvisously your panties got bunched before you read my intire message and started blurting out frustrations of a mad broke
    woman.

MoreThanALipstickPusher, I think your ignorance is showing!  Look at your spelling and grammar.  How dare you assume WWIT is a mad BROKE woman!  You know  nothing about her, yet make insulting statements about her.

If you put God first then you should be familiar with the Bible verse about removing the log from your own eye before pointing out the splinter in another’s.  Your English, spelling and grammar are really bad and you are complaining about WWIT?

If you can not write a check for $100 right now and be positive that it will clear immediately, then maybe you need Mary Kay.

If a person cannot write a $100 check and be sure it clears right now, I am sure God would not want this person to spend $100 on joining MK and then another $200-600 minimum on inventory.  I’m sure God would think it sensible to take care of your family before pouring your grocery and bill money into an MLM with no guarantee of making a dime.

To each her own. Get your job to finance you getting your GED. Your english is terrible and it shows.

I guess MK hasn’t cut your check to finish your GED yet, with sentence structure and spelling like that.

  27. WhatwasIthinking MonsterID Icon WhatwasIthinking Says:

LOL, thanks ladies for sticking up for me!
Morethanalipstickpusher, as they have said, your grammer won’t win any prizes. You may want to proof read your post BEFORE putting down someone else!  You made many more errors that I did!!!!!!

The reason that I attacked you is because you got on a thread that was about helping someone to say no and you did your recruiting schpeel What did you expect? Did you think we would say, oh yea that’s right? Duh, what were we thinking?

The pink fog around you is too thick!!!!!! We are here for you when you need us!!!!!!

  28. MoreThanALipstickPusher MonsterID Icon MoreThanALipstickPusher Says:

Hey ladies! I am back! I like this site. I am open to the comments and opinion. Maybe I can off on the wrong foot. I am new to MK and I have to respect the feelings of the women that I come in contact with.  I cant speak for other MK consultants, but I joined for three reasons. I needed more time with my young ones, I wanted to meet people outside of the job, and I was interested in the tax breaks. In corporate America I was paying more taxes than I cared to. I felt violoated! How DARE!
I dont approach women or try to recruite like my SD advise. I am not comfortable with it. If I am shopping and I run across a woman and the vibe is there, then I may bring up what I do. OR, if I meet her and I see that she or he have a skin condition that can be helped then I will introduce some product. So far that has been working and appreciated and I feel like I am helping. I offer customer service by following up with her to make sure that the product is working, if not, I offer an exchange of refund. That is how I roll!

Speaking honestly, after plugging myself into this site, I went to my unit meeting with three eyes wide open. I am sure that you know what I see when I pull up! I see Red Jackets, Chocolate suits, Pontiacs and Pink Cadillacs and wired up women in them! They are wired up for a reason! Once Ms MARY KAY pass out a car, you have to hump to keep it! Meaning recruiting and getting your recruites to order as much wholesale as possible and recruiting as many as possible. That would be where the annoying phone calls from the dreaded MK lady would come in! She is trying to either get a ride or trying to avoid getting a bill for that ride. The fun and customer service has been removed! The desperation of that dollar can make a person very ugly and make her wear more make up to cover it!
Talk to me ladies! I will be up for a few hours!

  29. Former Pink Attack Dog MonsterID Icon Former Pink Attack Dog Says:

Hey MoreThanALipstickPusher!  It sounds like you’ve had an epiphany in your MK life.

The beginning premise of MK when it started years ago was a revolutionary idea.  In the days when women were considered “delicate” and “dumb” and told “Don’t worry your pretty little head, Dearie”, the idea of a woman selling a product and making her own money was remarkable.  Fast forward to the 21st century and the “revolution” of MK has changed.  Women have fought for equality in the workplace and in common society and have won many battles.  It is no longer unusual for a woman to be in charge of a department, an office, or an entire company.  We have options now!

Many of us on this site have or had the same idea: make a little extra money doing something fun.  Unfortunately, there aren’t enough customers to go around.  If the whole world is a Beauty Consultant, who is going to buy from us?  No one has “dissed” MK products or the individuals involved.  The “group therapy” we all enjoy centers around unreasonable expectations, loss of savings, increased debt, guilt over foolish sacrifices, and perceived deceptions by our SDs, NSDs, or even the Company itself.

If you love selling MK, then I’m thrilled for you.  There are some women out there who have found those products to be the best for their skin and I certainly hope you find a lot of customers like that.  In the process, just please allow us the freedom to express our views, recount our own experiences, and state facts, many of which are negative.

I am glad you are “seeing the saccharin” and realizing that not everyone is honest and kind.  MK attracts some fine women, yes, but it also attracts some cut-throat “Bees” … and I don’t mean the “Diamond Bumble Pin” variety.

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome…we hope you will come inside our forum and give us a chance to get to know you better and get to know us too.

WWIT is not a grudge holder and she will be back and I am sure very accepting of your apology.  She’ll be one of the first to welcome you with a smile. :)

  33. WhatwasIthinking MonsterID Icon WhatwasIthinking Says:

Hugs and kisses MTALP! I agree we did get off on the wrong foot! My appologies to you too!

I think you must now realize why we are angry at MKC. People ask our opinion and we give it
1OO% and don’t hold back! We realize too that when you are caught up in the MK rah rah, it’s hard to admit that you may have made a bad choice {I said may have so don’t bite my head off, lol}!!!!

I guess the first time I realized that I made a huge mistake in joining MK and purchasing inventory was at my first meeting. Ladies stood up and cheered each other for sales and I believe the highest sales that week were $1OO, WTF did I just get myself into? I had just spent over
$2OOO.OO to join MK and I’m looking at an average weekly sales amount of $1OO? OMG!!! Anyway, I still believed in the rah rah crap and now $1O,OOO.OO in MK debt later, I gave up on “The Dream”!!!!

I hope you will jump on over and read a lot of our posts so you know that we are good kind people albeit, cranky about MK! LOL
Glad we could clear the air! Hugs!

I would like to say, reading the comments on this site have really opened my eyes. I’m a brand new MK consultant, and have come into it with my eyes wide open. MK works for me, and works for the women around me. I hope it continues to, and am sorry to hear so many people have had such poor experiences.

My SD is more than well aware that an inventory order is out of the question right now for me, and is very supportive. My recruiter is as well. They’ve both offered to open up their inventory to me until I can get on my own two feet a little bit. My unit is very supportive, and they’re all women just like me.

I’m glad to see there are others out there who aren’t stuck in the pink fog and are selling MK with an open mind!

  37. MTALP MonsterID Icon MTALP Says:

I had paused on MK the finish up remodeling my home. It took about 8 days. I wasnt making any MK calls and I was not getting any calls either! After watching the news all day today and listening to Uncle Sam proposal to bail out Washington Mutual (who sold my mortgage to another company earlier this year) that makes me nervous. Can you ladies see tougher times in our immediate future of this proposal passes? At this point, I am not really comfortable with the thought of even mentioning MK. I am thinking that MK products would be the last thing a woman would be thinking about when she is trying the keep roofs up and food down. Lets not mention gas. It went do a little but its still high! I got into MK for fun. If I were needing MK to pay a few bills, I honestly feel that I would be packing this stuff up and mailing it back!  We truely need to pray for our country and countrymen! Let’s touch and agree!

  38. MTALP MonsterID Icon MTALP Says:

Dang! Bad enconomy = crashing companies = unemployement = no cash flow = desperate individuals = higher crime and fewer law enforcement to enforce law because the chief parked more squad cars because gas prices are too high!!!!! ( BREATH……) i’m just saying!
