Review of the New Mary Kay Mineral Makeup

By L J June 25, 2008 72 Comments

I received this email from a visitor named Kristen. I think you’ll find it entertaining. I did.

I found your site while looking for a place to complain 🙂 . I just had my introduction to Mary Kay products trying the mineral makeups. I am NOT impressed!

I purchased a new mineral eyeshadow, and when I opened it to excitedly use my new shade, I find a PUNY portion in a VERY MISLEADINGLY sized container! PLUS, the eyeshadow is not made to adhere within the container. There is NOTHING to hold it in!!! I suppose you’re supposed to remove it and use it for their new compact. I find this a CHEAP marketing ploy. I don’t WANT to buy that compact, and now I have my insultingly small eyeshadow fall out EVERY freaking time I open it. I just know one day it is going to fly out of that stupid container, hit my wall, and shatter all over my carpet- and I want to send Mary Kay my carpet cleaning bill!! Either that or I need to get better at catch…

Also, I HATED how they kept PUSHING me to be a salesperson. I don’t WANT to sell Mary Kay- you’re lucky: I’m here trying and buying your products!! That is SUCH a turnoff.

The “Mineral” foundation I’m not too sure about. It made my skin look decent, but again, the size is very small for the money. The first two ingredients are Talc and Cornstarch, and it contains parabens. All of those ingredients are considered sketchy to use in makeup at the moment.

I just wish that HONESTY was more important for manufacturers than making money by twisted marketing schemes and cheap, unsafe ingredients. But, alas, this is the world we live in- and Mary Kay is not exempt.

All I know is, my father ironically, LOVES their skin care products! I haven’t much experience with those- but honestly, I don’t know that I can stand dealing with this Mary Kay lady again to order more.

“it was like putting face powder on your face, zero coverage and totally worthless as a foundation!”
Lipstick i have to agree with you on this one. It did nothing for me. No coverage. I do use the medium coverage foundation and apply the mineral foundation as a powder LOL

Cynthia, JMO…but you would be better off buying the MK loose powder for $12.50.  You get a lot more and it costs less than the Mineral Powder.
Thanks for posting, appreciate yur opinion and input.

Hey! To Kristin! I am so sorry you had such an awful experience with the “psycho” MK Lady!! I deal MK, too, but not in that manner! I never push people to sell…I’d lose some of my best customers! Did she ever offer to show you how to use the proper techniques for applying the eye shadow or the mineral foundation? We do have a great skin care program. No wonder your father loves the products! I’d be really surprised that “your” MK lady did not delve further into skin care with you. We sell more skin care than makeup, honestly. We do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you are not completely satisfied…she will have no trouble doing an exchange for you. I hope this one lady doesn’t spoil it for the rest of us! Hopefully, you find a great product that suits you! Good luck!

Guess it really depends on the individual. I am not a consultant, but I love most MK products. The mineral foundation has given me my best coverage of all of the others I’ve tried…and I’m 43 with my share of things to hide!

I tried to find ingredients for Mary Kay makeup and theyre basically no where to be found on the Internet, and definitely not on their site. Wonder what theyre hiding. I just emailed them. btw, they managed to complicate their contact information as well. You even have to leave your phone number just to ask  a simple question. But of course I left a fake one. ANyway, waiting for their reply now.

ruby, your consultant has the ability to look up and even print out the ingredients out for you to see.

Hi again,,,Just to keep you guys updated. After I emailed MK I received an email from them asking in which country I live (without answering my simple question about ingredients, THAT was all the information I needed). So I emailed them back answering where I live (in Sweden.)
Then I got another email from MK, again NOT answering my question but informing me that ” it is not possible – at the present time –to pursue a career as an Independent Beauty Consultant in Sweden or buy products, as we neither have a subsidiary there nor are we registered as a company in Sweden.”
I emailed them back (once again!) explaining that I never wanted to start selling MK products in Sweden, or elsewhere.  I also said that I might buy MK makeup through friends who live in other countries or on ebay. All I want are the ingredient lists of some of their products (which I have listed in my first email to MK).
Then I finally received a reply with the information I asked for. They also adviced me strongly not to buy their products on ebay. Considering that their supposedly more natural formulas are stuffed with chemicals found in any other cheap makeup, I wont be buying MK anywhere. Even their supposedly Mineral makeup line consists of typical ingredients, with only some minerals, not more than found in an average  eyeshadow. I certainly wouldnt call it “mineral makeup” if it barely contains any minerals.

Won’t be selling MK anymore. Parabens and other chemicals in the products which are linked to cancer, it’s such a travesty. And to think we’re to sell this stuff and donate to the MK Foundation which hellps to find a “cure” for women’s cancers. The cure is to not use the products in the first place.
Looks like the Am. Cancer Society is in cahoots with a lot of these big companies. They’re not interested in finding a cure. A patient cured is a customer lost.

Penut Butter also causes cancer if you eat enough of it.

Mary Kay puts billions of dollars into research every year to make their products even better. They have spent tons of money to make the products safe for use. Many of their products not only heal our skin, but protect it as well. I respect your decision, but I would also urge you to reconsider.

That’s funny. I’ve never seen any research to support this 😉

          Billions? No. Maybe millions.

They have spent tons of money to make the products safe for use.

They’ve spent money to make the products profitable. Safety is a relatively small concern for businesses in my observation.

Many of their products not only heal our skin, but protect it as well.

This is completely unsubstantiated and a claim that if they DID make about a product would have to have research to back it up. The FDA is a stickler when it comes to companies making statements about what they’re products are capable of doing.

No way, I’m quitting the biz. I refuse to sell something to people that can be harmful to them. Just take a look at the ingredient chart on this page: http://www.mercolahealthyskin.com/

Years ago I used to sell and recently bouth the discontinued oil free day radiance in what I thought was a light-medium shade, Bisque/Ivory.  It is awful…heavy and orangey undertones.  I do recall MK shades being darker than the name might imply.

Thank I thought I’d take a chance on the Mineral Foundation which I usually wear.
I usually use Bare Minerals….or Colorescience.  MK mineral makeup managed to make me look worse than with no makeup at all!  Again, very yellow undertones yet it is 0.5 Beige!  It’s so light, flies all around and the only way I can apply it is with a dry powder sponge .  The color is horrible….

I think I’ve give MK my last chance.  Years ago, I liked it.

This is horrible, I am very sorry to hear this. You most likely were sold an old bottle. This has happened to me before, my mother had an old starter kit with products she never used and she allowed me to have it after quite some time. Unfortunately the product was too old and therefore discolored.

I used to do that! I would put the mineral foundation over the medium coverage! I have actually found a better foundation; Clinque! They have an acne solution foundation and they even matched my skin better than the MK consultant! My face is actually clearing up now! I’m sticking with Clinque; the cost isn’t much different from MK.

Wow, I have used MK since I was15. I am 41.  I have Zero wrinkles and I am constantly praised about my skin.  My sister loves Este Lauder, my best friend loves Neutrogena so for those of you who love MK I’m with you, for those of you who don’t..who cares.. pick what is good for your skin and what makes you look beautiful…life is short spend some time being productive.. there is so much more to life than constant complaining.  Don’t blame others because you singed to be a consultant… I didn’t and never would, I don’t have time, plus sales is not my thing.  It is so frustrating to hear others complain about their actions…everyone has the choice you say YES or NO.  Otherwise your admitting you don’t have the brain to make decisions on your own,  take some responsibility for your own actions.

My, Leslie, I do think you might have made a wrinkle or two being so negative and making comments about others brainpower…you might want to check yourself when making personal comments about people you know nothing about.  Have a great evening!

Is it possible to open the mineral foundation container to ge the last of the foundation out? I’m sure I could drill a hole or cut with a saw but then I would have at least some shaving in the foundation.

I just want to be able to use a l l of the product.

You actually make it seem really easy with your presentation but
I in finding this matter to be really something that I believe I might never understand.
It seems too complex and very wide for me. I’m looking ahead on your next publish, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
