Lies and the Golden Rule

By L J May 8, 2008 55 Comments

Mary Kay Ash founded the Company on the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”So let me ask you this: Do you like being lied to?

You see, a lot of women who were in Mary Kay had a big problem with the fact that they had to tell little and not-so-little lies just to get appointments or recruits. For instance…

  • We found ourselves calling customers and telling them we were in a contest or our Director had challenged us to do 30 faces in 30 days. Yet we knew we weren’t. We knew that it was just a script; a gimmick to get our customer to hold a class with some new people so we could increase our customer base and maybe get a new team member.
  • We told potential recruits that it only cost $100.00 to join Mary Kay. We knew that technically this was correct, but that our recruits would be “encouraged” to purchase large inventory packages after they signed that agreement.
  • We knew that when we invited guests to meetings that it wasn’t just about having a “girls’ night out” or trying out the latest Mary Kay products. We knew our Directors were going to do a marketing presentation, just as they did every week, with the intent of getting our guests to sign up as a Consultant.

Is it any wonder that we dreaded calling our customers? Is it any wonder that we felt just a little bit dishonest?

I’m wondering if this is a personal integrity issue with the individual – don’t get me wrong, I felt the same way, too, when I first got started.  But I had to work it out in my heart and in my head.  I decided that I would not intentionlly decieve my customers and potential team members.

I do like scripts.  I think there is something to be said about not reinventing the wheel.  It has obviously worked for someone else.  I simply memorize it and make it my own.  I only tell my customers I’m in a challenge if I actually am.  In regards to a Power Start, it is a bar set for our unit that we strive for a power start every month.  So for me – no deception there.  If you don’t want that to be an issue for you – make power start your priority every month.  It will take you wherever you want to go in this business!  You know what though, its somewhat rare that I even tell my customers what I’m working towards, unless it comes up in conversation or unless it’s a really BIG goal that is coming up fast.  I just prefer to consistently work my business full circle.  Working full circle helps alleviate that panic we get when we need to place an order or meet a goal, etc because you are consistently working with women.

When I recruit a team member, I do the best that I can to lay it all out for them.  I don’t go over the inventory selections until their ‘first steps’ appointment as a consultant, because it can be a bit overwhelming.  However, I make it very clear during our initial interview, before they sign up, that I WILL be laying it all out like a buffet at the ‘first steps’ appointment – it’s their business, their choice how they want to start.  If they start with zip – it’s their business!  My job is to make sure that they understand their options and then I truly leave them to decide what’s best for them.  Regardless of what they start with, I am thrilled to have them as a team member and will do my best to show them how to make money with the resources they have.  I would rather they hold a couple of classes first and then place an appropriate order rather than feel deceived and overwhelmed.
Finally, when I invite a guest to a girls night out or a quarterly event, again, I do my best to paint a realistic picture of what they’re coming to.  Depending on whether it’s skin care or a color consultation – I describe what we’ll be doing.  I also tell them that we have free prize giveaways, I’ll be offering them a follow up appointment, and they’ll have an opportunity to learn how to do what I do.  I do tell them that we laugh and have fun – that they’ll fit right in.  Because we do!  And I believe they will!

So, from one consultant who feels as if she’s deceiving no one – that’s one opinion.  Again, I think it’s all in the individual and whether or not you choose to make a choice to work your business as honestly as possible.  I hope that helps for some of you who are doing just that.

Well… most of us are in cotests… so it isn’t lying.    This is YOUR business, and Mary Kay is NOT standing right over you saying “tell them this.”  YOU call your customers (if you want) YOU use the script (if you want).  They give you stuff to help you out, but you DONT have to use them.

If there is any “lies” going around… it’s NOT mary kay, its NOT the recruiter, its Not the director… it IS the CONSULTANT who chooses to do it.
Every consultant doesnt do the same things… I don’t even do all the challenges, I have another job, I go to school, and I’m getting married… so I don’t have time to do every challenge, but I sure wish I had all the time to do it, and the courage, and hopefully I will be able to get a challenge and complete EVERY one of them!

Some of the scripts and the “lines” are just flat out lies and deceitful!  “You can start for only $ 100”  WRONG – plus shipping and “training materials” this now runs about $140 and as soon as the inks dry on your check and it clears the bank, you’ll be pushed to order a MIN of $ 600 (plus tax, Sec 2 and shipping!) which will run around $ 750

“We’re looking for people who don’t know a lot of people”  “You don’t have to be a salesperson”  “We’re looking for sharp women like you”  “Make executive income for part time work” “You can’t afford not too”

All of these things (and many more) are said in order not to re-invent the wheel, (I assume wagon wheel) and MKC needs to realize that society is using a new type of tire now!

The ENTIRE “warm stalking chattering” thing really bothers me.  Complimenting a stranger and asking them if they’d like a “free facial”  – I don’t mean it bad but nowadays, this could be seriously dangerous!

There are directors/recruiters out there telling new consultants the MIN order is $ 600!  There are director/recruiters out there telling all kinds of things!

    MORE LINES/LIES –

How many companies reward you for each accomplishment?
How many companies grant you 50% cash back in all sales?
Do your company yield 4 to 13% in commision each month and every month?
Can you write off your everyday pleasantries on your taxes per year?
Can you write off a portion of your mortgage, utilities, cell phone bill, and meals?
Can you work part time hours and bring home a full time paycheck?
Will your company lease a car for you, pay the note, taxes, registration, and 80% percent of your insurance?

It doesn’t matter if you think it’s the IBC’s fault for lowering her integrity, her Director, and those above her, are training her to tell these lies.  It’s these little lies that make you say “oh, it’s just a small white lie, and it won’t hurt anybody.” that get you ready for the bigger lies later, like ordering to meet production, or asking a familby member to sign on as a Personal Use Consultant just so you meet your goals.
I had HUGE dreams when I first started Mary Kay, but soon realized the only way to make it to the top was to lower my standards and I refused.  Perhaps there is a way to reach your goals honestly, but I seriously doubt it these days.  I think Mary Kay Ash would roll in her grave if she saw what her company and it’s NSD, and so forth, had succumbed to.

I agree. i joined mary kay about six months ago, i fell for all the lies and crap that they had to feed us every week, and they also say, well you never hear a mk exconsultant say< my buisness failed becsause i didnt work my buisness. All a trick, i worked my buisness day in and day out, i spent countless hours booking parties, building customer base and constantly lieing to people to get them to come to my so called meeting. If youve been in mary kay you know the only way to really go anywhere in  this buisness, is to lie to people, trap them and recruit them, into debt for your own personal gain and thats not right. to get a car you must recruit to become a red jacket, you must recruit, to become a director,, you must recruit.ive seen people who clearly did not have money, shell out thier life savings because they were told it would make all their dreams come true. Also a lie. what they mean is, youll make their dreams come true becasue they make money off recruits and every order they place. They do not care about you, they care about how much you spend. I really trusted these women and mistook them for a support group of friends. however when i told my director id have to take a couple of days to spend time with my father who was dieing of cancer at the time, and that i was really bummed out and upset, all she had to say was, well i hate to see your momentum down and your sales down too! That was the moment i asked myself, what have i done? what is wrong with these people?so by the time they were done their brain washing session i had literally $10 to my name and if i didnt order my inventory for the month, i wasent worth calling, being around, or spoken to.please if you can not trap people into a lie and force  them to take out a loan for inventory and then have them find out you lied for personal gain this is not for you. this buisness is not about enriuching womens lives anymore its about destroying them.

I’M A MAN AND I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. I say I am a man in order to get a point across.
A woman in MK is worst than living with an eternal cancer. The pain and disconfort is so bad that you wish death comes as early as possible. What makes living with a consultant worst that cancer or any terminal disease is that this pain will probably not go a way at all.

Lies everywhere, every day, any time.
See; I had a beautiful wife who shared with me every part of her life, dreams and aspirations. One day one of her friends drove by in her “super my-car-from-marykay-come-and-see”.

My wife told me a couple of days after “I joined MK”.
      That was it!
She started complaining how little money we were making and how MK would take her to new hights.
She ordered the 600 american dollars kit.
She organized a party with friends and she herself LENDED money to plenty of women to get involved in MK (600 each). Now those friends won’t even pick up her calls.
For the party she invested more than 200 dollars and countless hours of phone and chat and meetings and this and that.
Out of a sudden my wife was talking MK over lunch. She would take the phone to make calls during LUNCH!!!.
Yes, she got a check for comission after more than a month in MK. The check was 375.00. She was happy. People… she was happy after lending all that money, after expending all this time and all this effort.

Her friend works up to 11:30 almost every day.
My wife new friends are now the MK people. There is no time for anything else. Sometimes the super beautiful clean appartment is not more than a place to drop things. And all she does is repeat the MANTRAS from the book.
Her car.. a catalog collection place, the room… an MK display. way too many products unfinished.
She gives products away. WE are losing all the friends we had are running away. they are afraid she is going to try to recruit them.

Some days I feel so lonely but if I say something is like I am “killing G-D” or something similar, she starts talking about not wanting anybody to control her. She does not want anyone to tell her what to do.
Now she needs more money, she needs to buy more things and she needs… and needs.
Not a single penny is left now… I need help.

        Hi Ricardo,

I’m sorry that you are going through this.  I don’t know exactly how to help you other than just saying to take the information that you are learning on this site and share it with her or direct her to this site directly.  I personally do not have a horror story with MK, but it was not up to what my recruiter and director made it out to be.  Please keep looking around here there are ladies that have a lot of wisdom to share.  Good Luck.

        Ricardo,

You will have to be very careful!  The MK Trolls see her as a cash cow!  They will try and milk her for everything they can get her to order!  Anything you say will be taken as negative and all her ‘new’ friends will support that you are negative!

Possibly you could bring up her inventory, as in, “wow, I see you have several of this item, is it new?” NEVER be negative or you will be nailed to a cross!  When she goes into her spin, after your comment and she probably will, “oh yes, this is new, blah blah blah” maybe you could ask how many parties she has lined up and that you would be supportive for her to hold more classes in order to HELP her sell her inventory and be more successful!

You’re gonna have to sugar coat it to the max and call it “being SUPPORTIVE”.   Maybe even telling her “I’d love to help you make the most of this” but I think we need to set some permiters to keep inventory fresh.

I’m sure there’s NO WAY she’d come to this site but you could get a lot of helpful information in the forum.  Click the forum button on top left side and join us!  We have other guys who pitch in and maybe they could offer more!

Best of luck! Hope to see you in the forum!

Ok, so in reading several post, prior to and after Ricardo’s i now ask if in someway brainwashed is the illiness ?
I like the products, yet in reading all of the book’s by Ms.MK,ASH I see no mention of ingredient’s or product proudness ? It should have been a BEAUTY BOOK by Mary Kay herself at some point only because their is more than MK, on her face, …..Had it been more on product quality and less on recruiting it would have been more fun,and a proudness to sale MK- Who needs the stress ? RICARDO- Your not alone.

I agree that living with a MK consultant can be hell. My now X brought the family to the brink of bankrupcy three times. I almost committed suicide so she could get the life insurance money to pay her bills. I was saved by the realization that if I was not around to manage the money she would just blow it. Almost all of the unsecured debt was due to her MK business.

We are now divorrced because she chose MK over her marriage.

Kristin, I’m sorry you endured such despicable treatment.  Actions speak volumes about the real way some MK SD’s and recruiters really follow the “Golden Rule” and how much stock they place in MK’s business philosophy “God 1st, Family 2nd and
     Career 3rd”.

When a family member is ill whether it is terminal or not, you should be with them and anyone who does not understand that, is not really your friend and IMO not living a Christian lifestyle, period!

Using other people for your own personal gain is not the act of a true Christian.  It sickens me to see how religion and faith are exploited in MK .

When money and personal gain are placed ahead of integrity and compassionate treatment of others, this speaks volumes about what the company is REALLY all about!

So very sad!  Kristin you will find caring, supportive and true friends in the forum.  Just click on the word “FORUM” in the tan toolbar at the top of this page.   You will find women who are kind, witty, supportive and caring.  We talk about a lot more than MK.

We have topics ranging from cooking, health, fitness, family, real careers, current events, humor, and even have a spot for active consultants.

Trish and Kristen, wow someone who has experienced and feels the same thing as me! I have been in MK for 1 1/2 and really want things to work. I really don’t want to place anymore orders because I don’t feel my director deserves the commission. I have some vendor shows coming up and feel I need to purchase the new holiday stuff. I so wish I new I could trust MK corporate to stand behind me with the golden rule, but feel I will be cut out of MK all together for causing trouble. Is their anyone in MK I can get guidance from that I can trust will be honest with me. I have a possible recruit and don’t want her to sign because of what I know and my director. My director is living off the new recruits, dumps the old and brings on new. What am I to do. I can’t switch units without going inactive for a year. Feeling dumped, confused and upset.

I went onto your blog and see there is address you send everyone to. I have seen these before and a friend of mine signed up and it was a scam. Not sure on that one. Not true,Just giving a second chance,if you want it.After the fire it taught me you need to know more, and helping others is what I do.Don’t you remember how bad you felt when you got taken by your director? I do,I was hurt, upset, not to mention pi$$ed off! She would place orders in my name for 1000,I would get the product, but I still owed it to her on top of my normal production, that Sucked! Well there is a lot of girls who are angry, hurt, confused, you know what I am talking about,I want to give them a second chance.Your director makes commission off of your orders.I am not a sales director,do you still love the products?I do,I want them for 50% that’s all,and still make some money with out getting taken advantage of anymore. The whole reason I joined M.K. was to feel good about myself and make some extra money for my family,I got taken too, because people get greedy,I have noticed on this site not everyone is against M. K.,just the way they were treated.Where I live people know me,and respect me,they know what I have been through and they know they can come to me because they can’t trust there director. You need to check me out on Google, and see that I do not use people.I do a lot for others as well as pray for them on Twitter,I have learned that there is life after the fire as well as life after being a sales director.Take Care Girls,Powerpink

Girls,People do not know this, but I am going to tell you anyway. When I was a sales director, there is a production you have to do every other month,it is 4000 and above,to stay a sales director,if you don’t,you are no longer a sales director. Can you imagine, finally becoming a sales director after all your hard work, and then finding out if you and your girls don’t make 4000 and above you are no longer a sales director? It is harder then anything to go though, you bust your butt to make the extra money for your production, that your team does not do,to stay a sales director.Or get this, you recruit people,o.k. you ask the others if you can use there name,to put a 200 order in so you make D.I.Q. not knowing they are not going to do the business? Then you have to come up with the difference in sales.Sucks huh! This is how people are being treated,as sales directors, not just consultants. Can you imagine, doing that on top of a fire and losing your product? That is why I had to step down.I am here to tell you to take back what has been done to you,and take back your life. Powerpink

Why would anyone want to call you? To find out about MK? That’s what this site is for. If you’re a director in MK now, then the only reason you’d want them to call you is so you can recruit them.

I’m well aware of the many ins and outs of Mary Kay. That’s why this site exists. I find it hard to believe you aren’t hoping to recruit with your comments here.

Your website is an embarrassing blatant sentences-running-together recruitment vehicle. And what are all those crappy software affiliate links for?! I’m sure MK wouldn’t be too happy to see that.

You obviously don’t understand what you are doing on your site, nor the fact that one doesn’t have to be a Sales Director to violate MK advertising and promotion rules.

I watched your video Lorraine. Not sure how I would think you are helping anyone in Marykay? All you talked about was try to get traffic to your web and not having the funds for all your businesses and how frustrating it was. What does that have to do with anything. I am just a little confused. I could not see any of your goals you showed and your pictures I could not see because the camera would not stay on it and was swinging around or going in too close to even see what it was. I think you all are being a little cruel here. Im not telling you how to run your blog (I respect you) but if the woman is telling the truth she lost her house! I dont think she is trying to recruit anyone. If I am missing something here please advise.

She lost her house. I am terribly sorry about that. But her posts have bordered on recruiting tactics. I received a promotional-type email from her via the contact form, her posts are more about promoting how she can “help” and tell you the real story about MK…and some other things that just aren’t quite adding to the discussion. I don’t think anyone has been cruel…that’s a tad harsh.

I think her “go-give”  just “got up and left”.  sorry Lorraine, but I agree with most of the others you are in this to drive traffic to your site and to help others by getting yourself more recruits and from your “blog” it seems MK might not be the only MLM you are involved in or at least trying to make money.
If I am wrong please explain exactly how you “help” people if you don’t recruit them and make money from trying to show them how to make money?  What’s in it for them?

O.K. first of all it is a choice what you chose to do.I do other things then M.K.,true I still love my M.K. but there is more people on this site that still like M.K. and are confused.I place media,I build blogs in any business, and if your feed up with M.K. maybe you might like to do something else.I am not trying to recruit anyone,I am actually trying to help you, but people are so judgmental they don’t see.I do what I like to do,I am not telling anyone what they have to do.I never sent anyone anything,I told you,you could go there if you wanted to.Someone else put the link, not me,and all I was saying is when you lose everything,no one really cares, they just want you to make money. My site is for me,yes it is about M.K.but I still love my M.K.You chose what you like to do.I am learning from muti-millionairs how to to dominate any market, that video you saw was me getting my life back

PLEASE…don’t make me laugh! Google doesn’t know you from Adam! “Connected to the Big one’s [sic]” — ROFL

Lorraine, you’re simply trying to drive traffic to your cheesy “work at home” sites. .

You aren’t giving opinions anymore, you’re just trying to drive links to your schemes. You make comments on blogs in an effort to promote your “businesses.”

Not acceptable here. Sorry. Go find another blog.

    Hi everyone,

I have been so amazed of what I have seen while being in Mary Kay. I had no idea that there would be such dishonesty and lets say “leaving important info out”. I had no clue about anything in sales and depended on the person bringing me in “director” to do what I needed in the business. I am a honest not “sneaky” person and really want this to work with my personality. I am begining to think that it wont because all the pushy and dishonest ones have ruined it for the rest of us.

Looking for the good light in this business to come my way.

Not a comment – but an appeal for help with my business.  I am a Mary Kay consultant and am looking for more customers.  I don’t do a lot of parties or recruiting.  Just need steady customers. If you are quitting the business and would like your customers to continue to be provided with excellent service so that they remember you as taking care of them as you exit, please contact me.  Thanks.

To Sherri, you may want to look into Silpada…I may have spelled it wrong but you can google it.  I have read up on them and almost signed up. On reason I did not because truely really did not want to do a jewelry business. Was not a good fit for me.

This is my first time posting here.  I absolutely love Mary Kay products but the way some of the Directors and consultants conduct their businesses is just awful.

My hat is off  to the owner of this site. This is a great place where everyone can share.. I have read alot of comments here. Some I agree with and some I don’t.

I believe you should never put all your stock in promoting a company like Mary Kay, Melaleuca (I use them too, famiy loves the products) or any company for that matter.

The products and the products alone are what prompted me to sign up for a second time around. If it depended upon the way the directors prey upon the unlearned and the ignorant, I would never look back. But I also see it as an opportunity to open up others eyes they way some of you do here to the truth.  Towards the end of my first enrollment I had even stopped recruiting because I new as soon as I recruited My director would pounce on them about inventory and I did not want them exposed to that.  Me…  I have always been adamant about treating my business like a business, which meant I was the  boss and made my own busienss decisions. I knew how to tell them to back off.

This time around, I connected with someone who is doing her business put the much the way I am and we can help each other.  I love the retailing, if someone signs up that will just be a bonus.

It’s all  about YOU and BRANDING YOU and the value you add to another person’s life.
You should take responsibility for your own training.  I never really got along with my “UPlines” so to speak because I believed in really being interested in people’s lives and concerned enough to even tell them not to sign up if it appeared they did not have a clue… I could have signed up alot more than I have and got paid big time on the front end.. But is that really doing the the right thing. No!

What we sow we shall surely reap for good or for bad depending on what we have sown into the lives of others.
I just want to encourage you ladies to take self inventory and think about who it is you really are who you want to be and seek your true purpose and how that can tie into you blessing others through your business.

Seek to add value and pursue purpose with passion… Because if you chase money, you will always be runnin’

    Peace and blessing

When I signed up I was not pushed to do trainings or to buy inventory. I was given a paper on everything, however I was told it was optional and that was the end of discussion. I am doing fine as a consultant, not making the “big bucks” because I have not tried to recruit anyone, I am holding around four parties a week and about to quit my part time job that I hate in order to go full time into Mary Kay, and I am absolutly loving it!

I’m a new consultant who bought in for $100 starter kit that’s not actually a starter kit. I’m being pressured to buy the $600 or $1200 package so that I can “have inventory on hand” for my future parties. I definately was lied to. I was told that they meetings were uplifting similiar to Joel Osteen and that I’d meet lots of friends. Far from it. Meetings are $25/month plus $10 for this and that. What a rip off? MK nickel and dimes you to death. I was looking to have some fun in the evenings not work another full time job. What a let down.
