In Business, You Don’t Turn Your Customers Into Competition
I remember well the “recruiting interview” I did with what ended up being my third team member.
I went over all the usual stuff and then asked her if she had any questions for me.
She said, “It all sounds great and I’m really excited about Mary Kay. But there’s one thing I don’t understand. Why would you want to recruit me? Wouldn’t I then be your competition? It seems like that wouldn’t be something you’d want to do.”
Yikes!
No one had ever brought this up before. I didn’t know what to say. I quickly rattled off something about how Mary Kay Ash founded the company to enrich women’s lives and we help other women be successful by helping them build a business…something like that.
But she was right.
Some competition in business is a good thing. It’s necessary, or otherwise you end up with monopolies.
But a real business doesn’t try to recruit their customers and thus create competition for themselves. It just doesn’t make sense.
