True or False: Pink Cadillacs are awarded to the top sellers of Mary Kay products
FALSE!
A common misconception of new Consultants, and the public in general, is that Mary Kay Inc. gives out Pink Cadillacs to members of their sales force who sell lots and lots of products.
Wrong!
You don’t earn the use of a car because you have sold thousands of dollars of product to customers. The only way you earn a car, or indeed move up in the company, is to get enough of your new recruits and current team members to place orders for product with the company. Period.
So while those women driving those pink cars are good sales people, it isn’t because they sold a bunch of moisturizer.
It’s because they sold the “vision” of Mary Kay, the company. They persuaded the people they recruited into the company that the only way to be really successful is to have a “full wagon” of products, usually several thousands of dollars worth.

This is the first time I’ve wandered onto this site, thinking it would be positive. I obviously was mistaken…
I think it’s great that you want to talk about the realities of the company! But none of it’s a secret.
I’m afraid this will probably be my last visit to this site, because so much of it is jumping to assumptions and talking about subjects of which the author knows too little of. I’m well aware that you will disagree. Of course you would.
Why do you write articles based on a phrase? Such as “A common misconception of new Consultants, and the public in general, is that Mary Kay Inc. gives out Pink Cadillacs to members of their sales force who sell lots and lots of products.” ? Please show me when this has ever been stated by someone from the corporate office? Honestly, I’ve never heard a director say it like this either. You might have .. but then I can’t imagine it came from a director who would last long. It pays to be honest and a person of integrity.
Thanks for your time and for investigating deeper truths. I do sincerely like to have intelligent conversations about such things. When this website is ready to be impartial and be ready to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly – let me know. Until then, good luck!

Actually Andi, to those who may be considering Mary Kay, it IS a secret. Most of this information is never revealed to them. Even after many women have joined, although this info is mostly available on InTouch, they don’t tell you the realities.
“I’m afraid this will probably be my last visit to this site, because so much of it is jumping to assumptions and talking about subjects of which the author knows too little of. “
Thanks for the insult!

Wow. You really don’t get it. You definitely didn’t read the article. As for integrity, is it demonstrated by insulting people, as you keep doing? How lovely.
“When this website is ready to be impartial and be ready to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly – let me know. “
We certainly do. Too bad you can’t find it.
Unfortunately, if a woman is looking for a REAL business, Mary Kay isn’t it.

I’m amazed that this is the first time Andi has ever seen this site. Since all the Unitnet sites got locked up tighter than Fort Knox just to keep us all from seeing the latest deceptive marketing techniques — whatever.
All of us go the same recruiting material – all of us heard all the same lies to get us to sign up!

*snicker*
I’m sorry LJ – I know it probably annoyed you, but I did have to laugh. I totally hate it when people come to my site and then read one or two posts (or just the titles!), then make some blanket statement about my knowledge of a subject, or how I’m this or that (or not this or that). It’s totally annoying when it happens – but from a reader perspective and knowing you, it made me laugh because basically, you can just ignore her whole comment.
As far as the subject, that was one thing that always bothered me while I was in MK, was that people (not in MK and also newer consultants) would always ask how much I had to “sell” to earn the Grand Am, and how much more would I have to “sell” to earn the Cadillac. I quit trying to explain it because I got sick of that confused look. Now I know why they looked so confused when I tried to explain that it wasn’t based on selling AT ALL!
I won’t even get started on maintaining the damn thing. One of the best days of my MK career was when that little old man came to haul that black hole of debt out of my garage. A friend of mine’s was picked up the same day and she called me in tears – she felt like such a failure. I was like, “Dance around your house and BE HAPPY!”

Thanks Baroness!
Yes, I got a good laugh out of it as well. I mean, if Andi doesn’t come back this whole site will just dry up, won’t it? teehee

I don’t understand where this one came from either…..
I just became a consultant and I new top people in Mary Kay got pink caddys…. but I also new (and the directors and everyone made sure that I knew) that it wasnt TOP SELLERS…..
if you think about it… the TOP sellers have the huge team behind them which gets them through DIQ (director in qualification)…. Directors (after a certain point of time) get their caddilacs….
If you guys were REALLY thinking about joining you would ask consultants and directors and everybody… not some site who just disses the whole opportunity.

WOW!!! Unfortunately, I think many of you that post on this site thought that you could sign up with MaryKay, do nothing, and be rich. Of course, you found out you had to work..so you quit..now you are bitter. I feel sorry for those of you that live your life with such bitterness and ignorance.

Jeaker, I find nothing here where anyone has said they thought they could sign up with Mary Kay and do nothing. That’s ridiculous and there’s nothing here to suggest anyone was dumb enough to believe that.
What they did believe is that Mary Kay was a viable way to make money. They believed it when their Directors told them they could “work part-time hours and make a full-time income.”
Your type of comments are typical. We’ve seen them before, so they don’t phase us anymore.

I am a consultant, yes people sometimes do get the wrong impressions about how to get a car but, it isn’t mary kay the company it all has to do with your director they are the ones who are suppose to give you the information. I never thought everyone could get a car just by joining I knew how to get one. Yes, you have to work but isn’t that what having a job is? only you pick when, where how many hours.

Sabrina it’s not the team that gets them through it is the act of recruiting a certain number of team members and maintaining a certain level of “production” which is basically wholesale orders from their team members!
You don’t just become a Director and after a while get a Cadillac…again it’sall about the total $ value of wholesale orders from the SD’s unit!
Incidentally wholesale orders don’t always mean that the product has been sold!

Sabrina it might surprise you to know that we speak from personal experience. Most of us were at one time IBC’s, SD’s, car drivers, team leaders…we do know what we are talking about and most of us were misled and told lies about the executive income to be made in MK. The statement that there are more women making 6 figure incomes in MK than in any company is a flat out lie! And the incomes they are using and posting in the Applause magazine are commissions, before chargebacks and business expenses have been deducted!

Wow Jeaker, you couldn’t be further from the truth. We worked our businesses and tried really hard to make money, but let’s face it the expenses are far higher than the money you make. We aren’t bitter, and if you visited the site you would see how we support one another and we talk about much more the MK….our children, our families, our pets, cooking, health, exercise, we joke and we have fun….not a lot of time for bitterness, but we are there to help those heal from their bad experiences with MK and to shine the light on the pitfalls and deception in MK.
I never thought everyone could get a car just by joining I knew how to get one. Yes, you have to work but isn’t that what having a job is? only you pick when, where how many hours.
Rachel…I sincerely hope that you aren’t too deep in the fog to make a simple balance sheet:
Expenses in one column, including product, business supplies, samples, PCP, MK events, shipping, Hostess gifts, discounts,
Income in the other from retailsales and commissions
Subtract the expenses from the income and divide by the total hours spent in calling, warm chattering, attending unit meetings and MK events, prep time for classes, set up and clean up , filling and deleivering the orders,. divide the total hours into the difference between retail sales and expenses and you will find you are probably lucky to make minimum wage!
There is someting to be said about a job with paid vacation, sick leave, insurance, pension and set hours…it’s called “Security”. You won’t find that in MK!
