How were you recruited?
An old friend, who seemed to really have my best interest at heart. All I heard about was the potential for on going success, while only having to work part time. How MK was based on God and Family, and everyone’s willingness to help me succeed.
What about Mary Kay appealed to you most?
The opportunity to “own my vey own business”, and run it the way I wanted. To be able to work from home and raise my children. To finally have financial freedom.
Tell us about one of your most memorable or embarassing situations while in Mary Kay
God first, family second, and your MK business third! How many times have you heard that? Well, that’s exactly what roped me into believing I would succeed. I am all about God and my family, unfortunately MK is not! The very first time that I told my Director I could not make a meeting due to family obligations, I was basically scolded and guilt riddened! This happened time and time again. I was a breast-feeding mother, and raising 3 children, in which 2 were heavily involved in sports! My Director made it clear that her only expectations of me were to Recruit first, Sell second, and Attend all MK functions third, regardless of any other obligations I may feel are important!
What did you learn from your Mary Kay experience?
Not only did my Director and the company as a whole dissappoint me, I learned that technology is very hard to work against. I tried very hard to make “my business” a success. Afterall, I am a firm believer that you have to work it, and not expect customers to just show up at your door. I also have a great deal of confidence in the MK products. I do use them and intend to keeping using them, since they are products that I love. Unfortunately, My efforts were to no success after many of my customers informed me of the technological disadvantages that include SEVERAL websites that sell MK at, or below my cost, not to mention all the products that are sold on e-bay. I mean really how can you compete with that?
What are you doing now? Working full or part time? Working from hom? etc.
I still work from home (my way), and raise my children. I am fortunate that although I have accumulated MK debt, I can at least say that I will use some technology of my own to recover some of what I have lost.
Additional Comments
Don’t be fooled by the “laws of Mary Kay”. There are several things that you will not be told, and will soon discover the dissappointments on your own. First, make sure that your director is true to the God, Family, Business policies. Next, know that people DO and WILL sell products online, cheaper than you can buy them. Also, don’t forget that once you let those 2 months get buy with out making a purchase, you are going to find yourself $200 more in debt, just to purchase a lipstick that you don’t happen to carry in stock!
