How were you recruited?
I was recruited when I was 8 months pregnant by a customer at the car dealership I worked at. I’d been thinking about doing Mary Kay after my daughter was born, so I jumped at the opportunity.
What about Mary Kay appealed to you most?
Working for myself so that I would have time to spend with my baby girl.
Tell us about one of your most memorable or embarassing situations while in Mary Kay
I don’t have anything particularly embarrassing, but I’m not a very “rah-rah” person, so the meetings were always sort of ridiculous. And, for some reason, my director always wanted to use me as a model, which I didn’t care for. I just wanted to sit and have a little “me” time, not be a guinea pig for whatever new product there was!
What did you learn from your Mary Kay experience?
I learned that I am really not cut out for the MLM model. I don’t enjoy foisting products on my friends, family, and the unsuspecting public.
What are you doing now? Working full or part time? Working from home? etc.
I take care of my baby and do some part-time work editing curriculum from home. I get the freedom to work whenever I want doing something that fits my personality better.
Additional Comments
I’m sure Mary Kay is great for some people, but it wasn’t for me. I’m not a very “pink” person (I hate both skirts AND hose!), and it just wasn’t a good fit. I like some of the products and still use them, but it’s really nice to buy other makeup and not feel guilty about it!
You hit the nail right on the head. I totally feel the same way.
