How were you recruited?
By my lovely consultant, who is also a Director. I had been using MK products for 10 years, so it was an easy “next step” for me. I’ve always loved MK product and wanted to be an “insider” to all the goodies. My director is the sweetest; never pushed or tried to “hard-sell” me on anything. I told her I wanted my business to stay small and she totally supported me; still does, with lots of contact and encouragement. I go to weekly meetings regularly. When I say no to seminars and such, I get no flack whatsoever.
What about Mary Kay appealed to you most?
Getting my stuff at half price! Also, getting to play with makeup and all the neat new stuff that keeps coming out. Knowing that I can make my business as big or as small as I want was a big incentive. I was never nervous about it getting out of hand, because I knew I was in control.
Tell us about one of your most memorable or embarassing situations while in Mary Kay
I’m a pretty low-key consultant, so I just sell my product and attend weekly meetings, and only order as I need. I haven’t ventured into the seminars, or other “events” so nothing earth-shattering to report here. I’m having fun with it, so that’s all that matters!
What did you learn from your Mary Kay experience?
How to project a more professional image! I never used color before I became a consultant; I only used MK skin care. Now that I really know how to use color without looking like a clown, it makes me feel much more professional and has boosted my confidence a bit.
What I’ve also learned is how important your recruiter/Director is. Mine is wonderful, so I’m one of the lucky ones. My advice to anyone who is thinking about becoming a consultant is to really think about WHY you want to do it. If it’s to make a ton of money, then go buy a lottery ticket. As I said, I got into it to have fun, and get my stuff at half price. I sell enough to keep my business going, and that’s all I ever wanted. So I have no complaints.
What are you doing now? Working full or part time? Working from home? etc.
I have always worked full time, and still am. Love my job; MK is more of a fun hobby than a career for me. I have a great job working for the state with phenomenal benefits, so I will never give that up. But it’s nice to know that if I choose, I can make my MK business bigger.
Additional Comments
MK is what you make it. I got in for the fun, and it is. If it stops being fun, then I will quit. You don’t need inventory. Most women are more than happy to wait for an order. If you have a recruiter/director that is pushy, it is perfectly okay to tell her to back off! It’s YOUR business, not hers. Your true relationship is with the company, not your recruiter. As long as you stay active with the company, you’re fine. Do what you’re comfortable doing. Example: I refuse to “warm chatter.” It’s not my personality. I do most of my business with PCP mailings, emails and I promote my website. And my business is going fine!

Congratulations! Good luck and KEEP LEVEL HEADED! You sound like you are on the right track to stay happy with this company. Don’t get sucked up in fluff! (though you don’t sound like you are)!
