How were you recruited?
I was recruited at a job at a bank by a Mary Kay rep. She told me how great it was to be with Mary Kay and she took me with her while she made her rounds to collect on her so called “Sale”. People were racking up and it just looked so easy to me. She picked me up for a meeting even allowed my son to come along for the trip.
What about Mary Kay appealed to you most?
All the excitement and singing and clapping just got me excited not to mention the the qouted top sales of the week by the existing consultants. I signed up on my next payday and my drector must have known she had me because my starter kit was at the door when I came and she had another delivered moments later for her next “victim”. Soon I was invited to the regional meeting to greet and worship the queen. I came dressed in a blue jean skirt (it was the only one I owned) (this is by the way one of my embarrassing moments) she scolded me for not wearing a black skirt and nylons. When I arrived I felt like an outcast and then I was asked by queen bee if I was going to make director. I said yes but I know I lied when the words left my lips.
Tell us about one of your most memorable or embarassing situations while in Mary Kay
There are quite a few like when I had to explain to my fiance why $400 dollars were missing from his account then later replaced. He couldn’t trust me nor understand why I needed more inventory when the crap I had was collecting dust. Further more I used my paycheck to replace the money because unlike what my recruiter told me the product did not sell itself. Another was trying to get young women from my college to buy Mary Kay. I put lip gloss samples in the washroom attached to a flyer and in a fishbowl. When I came back to find perspective customer numbers all I found were my flyers on the floor in the trash with empty sample packets in the garbage. I spent money at the copy store to create those flyers.
What did you learn from your Mary Kay experience?
Never trust anyone who plays on your insecurites. She knew that I had a son and she went right in with the “you’ll spend more time wiht your son and you won’t have to pay for daycare.” I was allowed that one and only time to bring my son to a meeting. After that I was told children are nto allowed and to find a sitter.
What are you doing now? Working full or part time? Working from home? etc.
I work for a sucky vacation company. It’s not my dream job but at least I get to travel and I don’t have to hassle family and friends for facials.
